Yeah, if you had something other that C-rations or K-rations...you ate better. And, we spent many a night in fox-holes or underground bunkers. But...occasionally, circumstances improved.
We did have C-rats on deployment and they were a lot better than MREs - the early MREs. I sat in an air conditioned room surrounded by radio equipment and it was so cold we wore our parkas even in the summer. That's the extent of my hardship in the military which was really no hardship at all.
Our chow halls were definitely the best.
