New Jersey School Cancels Veterans Coloring Contest Because Soldiers Had EEEEVIL Guns in Drawing

A New Jersey elementary school canceled a coloring contest with the U.S. veterans group the American Legion because the image the kids were supposed to color has in it soldiers holding eeeevil guns.

The American Legion created a line drawing featuring American soldiers through history that it titled, “The Four Pillars of the American Legion.” The line drawing is part of the Legion’s kiddie coloring contest and has been distributed to schools in New Jersey.

“Three uniformed soldiers from 1919, 1965 and 2019, carrying guns from their respective eras, are pictured, along with a nurse from 1941. The page also contains the POW/MIA logo and a battlefield cross, a rifle stuck upward in the ground alongside a soldier’s boots and helmet,” the Bergen Record reported.

Some New Jersey public schools will not take part in this year's American Legion coloring contest because of concerns over the depiction of guns in the image provided.

But Hamilton School in Glen Rock Public Schools System informed the New Jersey American Legion that its students would not be allowed to join the coloring contest. Because GUNS!!

Superintendent Bruce Watson said it was a districtwide decision, but he did not specify the nature of the objection. The coloring contest was not discussed in open session during the board’s Feb. 5 meeting and did not appear on the closed-session agenda.

Fortunately, the Legion did not bow to this bullying and did not change the drawing.

Still, veteran Ken Frank, Post 145 vice commander, said that he and other veterans feel disrespected by the school district.

“We are very upset, and we feel disrespected. There wasn’t any reason given, and there hasn’t been another school in the state, that we’ve heard of, that’s refused to use the picture,” Frank said.

Granted, the social media backlash was immediate and the school took the brunt of the condemnation.

Ultimately, the district decided to reverse its idiotic decision and will now participate in the coloring contest.

The aforementioned Mr. Watson noted that he got “a number of emails” about his stupid decision to dump the contest.

“This has caused me to pause,” Watson said in a follow up statement. “Perhaps I had too much concern for the impact of the picture. Today we look at everything thru a different lens when it comes to our students. There was no disrespect intended and now after listening to parents, I will reverse this decision and allow the pictures to go home for parents and students to decide if they wish to compete.”
