WASHINGTON — A federal watchdog investigating whether the Internal Revenue Service unfairly targeted conservative political groups seeking tax-exempt status said that the agency also scrutinized organizations associated with liberal causes from 2004 to 2013.

The findings by the Treasury Department’s inspector general mark the end of a political firestorm that embroiled the I.R.S. in controversy, led to the ouster of its commissioner and prompted accusations the tax collection agency was being used as a political weapon by the Obama administration.

The exhaustive report, which examined nine years worth of applications for tax-exempt status, comes after a similar audit in 2013 found that groups with conservative names like “Tea Party,” “patriot” or “9/12” were unfairly targeted for further review.

The new report found that the I.R.S. was also inappropriately targeting progressive-leaning groups. While the investigation does not specify the political affiliations of the groups, names that were flagged included the words “Progressive,” “Occupy,” “Green Energy,” and Acorn — the acronym for the now defunct Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now.

The I.R.S. came under fire for its aggressive questioning of conservative groups in 2013. After a surge in applications for tax-exempt status between 2010 and 2012, the agency acknowledged that it began singling out terms such as “Tea Party” and “patriot” as a shortcut for determining if organizations were actually engaging in social welfare, which would qualify them for tax-exempt status, or if they might be political organizations.

To receive nonprofit status a group must be “primarily engaged in the promotion of social welfare,” according to I.R.S. rules. Such organizations can engage in some political activity “so long as, in the aggregate, these nonexempt activities are not its primary activities.”

But now it appears that the I.R.S. was an equal offender.

“This report shows the I.R.S. deep scrutiny of political groups is in fact bipartisan, it is liberal and conservative groups that the I.R.S. has been targeting,” said Craig Holman, a government affairs lobbyist for the consumer advocacy group Public Citizen.

“After years of baseless claims and false accusations it is my hope Republicans will finally put an end to this witch hunt and admit that their attacks on the I.R.S. were nothing but political grandstanding on behalf of special interests at the expense of American taxpayers,” said Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Finance Committee.

Well, that certainly clears things up. Consumer citizen a left wing progressive institute. Ron Wyden a left wing democrat. NY Times?

You have been told over and over on this sight how disastrous Obama was. Nobody wants to repeat it to you because you are absolutely blind like the left wing media. Economy that was trending positive? HA! HA! HA!.

The ignorance displayed by that is epic, statistical facts are what they are, and you refuse to try to tell me how bad the economy was because these stats are the facts.

...The stock market had been hitting new record highs for some time during Obama's last term...
...5% unemployment
...he had seen 14 million jobs back from the 25 million Bush lost, 84+ straight months of new jobs
...robust real estate markets, houses selling super fast...high values

So what was so profound and economy changing for Trump to have kept things going the way they were going until his policies starting rocking that stability? What did he fix that Obama had destroyed?

Please tell us what Obama had screwed up so bad, I have never had a response to that.

It is incredible how people look at things in such a simple way, but of course it is at their own convenience because they (you) want to “belief in something”.
That something is what you’ve been told! Everyday they feed you with lies, and you believe them of course.

There an old chinese proverb that say, “If you tell a lie a thousand times, it became true”
And it is true! But maybe you don’t have to say it so many times to people for them to believe!

Mr. Obama all he did (or said) as his BIG strategy to get the economy back was and still is for democrats because it is so appealing,
“to get from the rich and give it to the poor” in his 8 years.

All he did, economically speaking was another big lie, the Obamacare, definitely a Government Control Socialist program which if applied as Obama and democrats want, it will eliminate any competition, and therefore the quality and goods will go to the floor!

Socialism in theory is good, but the reality is and it is a proven one;
IT IS A BIG LIE!
It is incredible how people look at things in such... (show quote)

Dude, the GOP comes right out and admits to lies and rhetoric, Conway saying that if lies are repeated enough they become the truth, she admitted to alternative facts, saying "well lots of people believe them".

Like I said groups of people,I did not say left nor right. He set race relations, in my modest opinion back several years ! Just what the system wanted. In return they made him President, with all the perks that go with it. News meda mainstream most always bending the news to make him a super star. The system paving the way for Mr.& Mrs.Obama long before he became OUR President! It's all there if one cares to have the truth ! He was just another man the system used, and is still using when need be. I hate to say it but he sold his soul, I will pray that just maybe he can find a way to buy it back! All the best!

Citizens United was the GOP baby, it paved the way for out of control political bribery. 501c groups or super PACs. The conservative groups were ready long before the liberals because they had a heads up. Thusly, there were many more GOP groups to investigate for fraud. Lois Lerner did not need anyone to tell her that this was a big crime opportunity for the politicians.

Why didn't your brother buy insurance on the open market? It would have doubled if he had worthless insurance.
