The United States government is currently in a shutdown because President Donald Trump wants to build a wall — a “big, beautiful wall” along the United States’ border with Mexico. But a viral video posted by Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-Tex.) illustrates exactly why Trump’s beloved wall is completely unfeasible.

First of all, if you’re going to build a wall along the Mexican border, that means building it alongside the Rio Grande, America’s fourth longest river which, as Think Progress points out, has been flooding more frequently and with increasing severity. So if the government can’t build the wall right along the river, that would mean it would have to use eminent domain to seize land from Americans who currently own land where Trump wants to put the wall. As an article in the libertarian publication Reason noted, most of the land along the border is owned by private citizens, Native American tribes, and the state of Texas.

Furthermore, O’Rourke’s video points out, building a wall would create hundreds of thousands of acres of a “no man’s land” between the river and the wall. It would also destroy important wildlife corridors and federally-preserved lands.

The video also mentions that since 2007, most undocumented immigration is occurring because people are overstaying their visas, not because they are crossing the border illegally. Therefore, a wall would do little to deter this type of immigration.

But, of course, none of the reasons outlined above will stop President Trump from holding the government — and the paychecks of 800,000 federal workers — hostage while he demands funding for his pet project.

Tell ya what. Come to Arizona and say that. Never mind will take the criminal over a leftist. No mans land is what it is supposed to be No illegals and no ICE needed. As for the poor illegal wild life who cares it's better than supporting 22 million uneducated free loaders. Think about it. These free loaders are cutting in to you leftist freeloading and when they are caught cheating like you all do for that extra food stamp all they have to say in 'No speaky de English' and all you'll be able to do is drool. Then again the term stupid is the common denominator of all you leftist agendas.

The President never said a wall would cover the entire 2000 mile border, but an est.
750,000 ppl are attempting illegal entry across that border this year! Approx. half of those have been arrested. Clearly a huge no.
of ppl, and far more than opponents will admit. What would Pelosi do to stop these masses from invading the U.S.? Or is she of the dems who secretly see legalizing the millions of illegals to give her party a permanent voting majority? One party rule forever.

Ol' Beto (aka Robert Francis) doesn't want the wall because it will cause problems for his Cartel buddies who pay cash at his momma's furniture store. Oh, Beto (aka Robert Francis) lost his bid for senator, by the way. He's a loser.

It is simply the cost? ecological factors? social factors? that you has/have made you an opponent of 'the wall'?

One thing almost everyone seems to miss: Trump is going all out for that stupid wall because Trump sees a 1500 mile wall on our southern border as a lasting monument TO HIMSELF, and nothing more.

I, most assuredly, have completely missed that fact... It would be a difficult legacy to demolish...

Premise: If the measure is not completely effective it is therefore entirely futile?

Pres. Trump should not have asked for a wall. Instead he should have asked for a fence.
Might have been more acceptable. Then give it low voltage, just enough to knock people off and stun them.

For the first couple of months, until most "attempted" border jumpers are from the aggressive end of the scale, then significantly increase the voltage so we enter the "example making" phase, so they'll know we're serious.
O
This would curtail attempts quite a bit by the bad guys, necessity being the mother of invention, would find ways to penetrate the fence unless it's actually a wall, properly electronically monitored and with county HQ'd federal fast response teams.

Herding cats! The current method does not work! You round them up, get them a court date, release them. IF they show up for immigration court and are deported, they simply enter through a different part of the desert. Then you catch them, get them to court, release them.... over and over and over again!

When Trump is asking for 5 B for the wall, yet we spend 150 B on the illegals that come here and demand that we support them. This is rather a no brainer! I agree, this business of "catch and release" is ridiculous. In many areas along the West coast, due to having to house illegals, there now is a shortage of housing causing rents to go sky high, so that many elderly and borderline US citizens are having a difficult time meeting their rent.

You are talking apples and oranges. As far as I know, we have not bombed Latin America back to the stone age. Or did I miss that, or perhaps you may be missing that key ingredient?Germany did repay her loans and oh by the way, they agreed to numerous military installations within their country... which was good for the US and Europe. So far, we do not have any bases in Central America and none will be established. The German people had to pay for all the goods and services given to the nation (money was put into a separate account to pay off previous debts)... so, the people did not get anything for free. Latin Americans come here to receive goods and services for as long as the government will support them. Germans did not knock down our borders demanding anything. Latin Americans do destroy borders and they do demand. Germans went hungry to feed their children. Latin Americans drag their children or those they acquire thousands of miles irrespective of conditions or diseases, thirst or starvation; they become disposable assets.... if they die before reaching the border, they are simply put in a hole and covered over.... if they die at the border, then it is the fault of President Trump and they sue. Germans worked hard, poured their own concrete... hammered the wood, paved their roads.... Latin America asked when will we step in and do the work.... Do you see a difference?

Why not just build guard towers every 100 yards manned with guards with AK-47s and grenade launchers and just shoot anyone coming within 10 yards of the wall? That worked pretty well for awhile in Berlin.
There’d be no shortage of brain dead Trump yahoos to man the towers.
