If you ever had to end a life you would not even play claiming it fun. Self-Defense it's just that. Nulling a threat to your safety and or others around you. A gun is last resort but if needed better too have than fall victim forfeiting your life.
Peter, I hope you're never put in that position. Terrible choice to be forced into but still better than not having any options and being slave to scenario.

That's funny. I know a number ofr people who own guns and have never hunted in their life and don't want to. You must live in a very select neighborhood.

I was put in that position. I was at home, alone, and a man started banging on my door trying to bust it down. He broke the window and was going for the inside doorknob when I pointed my GLock 33 at his head and said very loudly "Are you sure you want to come in here?" He bolted. The police were at my house in 12 minutes, so they would not have been any use to me at the time of the incident. I'm telling you, it only takes one time - I honestly believe I would have been killed. (They caught the guy - he was wanted for armed robbery in several other break and entry cases in Raleigh, NC and he's in jail.)
