Are you speaking about roots ? That has also happened to me. Years ago we were clearing a weed bank and tearing out the roots. It was early spring and the poison ivy leaves were not out yet. In the spring the roots are full of sap. Some of us could not close our hands for a week because our fingers were so swollen. We used corn starch to soak up the pus that oozed constantly the whole time. Now I know. If you see fine red or brown hairs on bare roots, do not touch. You're correct, every part of the plant is poisonous, all year round including when it is leafless in the winter months. A little bleach and water really does work, follow then with some calamine. My daughter got it in her belly button when six of all places when she was five, it looked terrible, oozing mess then a friend told me about the bleach and water, cleared it right up.
