I constantly hear that all we need to fix all of our immigration problems is "Comprehensive Immigration Reform" but nobody especially politicians ever define what it entails. All I want is a clear idea of what this nebulous thing is.
com - pre - hen - sive: complete, including all "nearly" all elements or aspects of something. Did you catch the word nearly?
In recent years we have repeatedly heard, "immigration laws are broken". That claim is both correct and not correct. Regardless, "It's" not going to get fixed until the politics are removed from it. And that is why you, me, the world, hear "comprehensive".
Remember the "nearly" part? A comprehensive Immigration Law, a seemingly brand-new rewrite will give us citizens all we need plus the nearly part. In other words; we the public see too much of what is involved with immigration hindering how that pie gets divided amongst our elected. I am not kidding here. That's a headache and that why DC NEEDS a comprehensive rewrite.
Allow me to preference my close; *I know each of you will call me unrealistic even ignorant, so be it*. You're entitled to your position. Given the historically proven mantra, everybody gains when government gets out of the way and the free market takes the lead, I suggest:
The agency we know as the Border Patrol, to include all its monikers, should be reduced to nothing more than an Overseer of border activities. All federal real estate holdings associated with ports of entry, detention facilities, education & medical, turnstiles, roadways & tolls, all of it, should be sold to the private sector. Literally, allow the free market to price not only the commodities freight fees but also the cost of and to an individual immigrant.
Allow the corporate headhunters' office space (at FMV) in every embassy and begin the process of immigrating at the point of obvious origin. FEE-BASED IMMIGRATION! Are you educated? If not will you be attending a university in the US? If so, the cost of education is then guaranteed by the prospect's employer and deducted or otherwise accounted for from wages earned alleviating the use/abuse of tax dollars.
Before you spit on this idea consider; 1) UNV @ Reno, Asian medical student population is supported by their respective country of origin as is the case with Arab students of medicine USI, Carbondale and when a graduate takes employment here rather than return home the employer reimburses the home country.
2) Once upon a time Mexican farmers and laborers would present themselves at the ports or other preassigned addresses (Western & Alameda Los Angeles, Calexico/Mexicali, Nogales, Anthony, Loreado, Brownsville, etc.) as the US harvest was coming in. Wages, housing and YES vocational education that included agronomy, specialty equipment maintenance, logistics, was all understood by and between the parties involved. Hell, the border patrol would wave at the buses, trucks, and caravans as they went north and again at seasons end as nearly everyone returned home. In all honesty, it was not until Chavez and his band of socialist supporters showed up did any of the border states have a serious problem directly resulting in the division of respectful labor/management relations.
3) With e-verify, internet access being what it is, any industry could and should be locating/qualifying & hiring prior to migration. Each industry's web page might describe current and upcoming opportunities. Interested? Register and qualify for an interview in our embassy office. (a creative employer could cripple the coyote's business)
4) There are 10s of thousands of individuals who have life-long experiences with border logistics and half as many corporations all qualified to create and lead such a free market operation. For those of you who may not be familiar with commercial real estate financing take 15 minutes and research 'hedge-funds'. If President Trump said on Monday, "I want $100 mm by Friday for all border assets" the hedge-funds would have it completed by Wednesday. (or whatever a price named) By the end of the 1st year, all the bumps would be smoothed and by the 10th anniversary, we wouldn't remember the names of all the politicians and pundits that screamed foul.
However, because there is no "nearly" in this idea it would not qualify as a comprehensive immigration plan. Thanks for listening
