At the Deadline Club of New York this week, Lesley Stahl of "60 Minutes" recalled an off-camera conversation with Donald Trump at Trump Tower in July 2016 [date corrected] (via CNBC):

"[H]e started to attack the press ... I said, ... 'You've won ... Why do you keep hammering at this?' And he said: 'You know why I do it? I do it to discredit you all and demean you all. So when you write negative stories about me, no one will believe you.'"

You are getting played. It's sad. You have lost your entire faith in the mainstream media, one of our most venerable institutions. Sure they get it wrong occasionally, but are largely correct. THe NYT and WAPO do outstanding reporting and are an appropriate check on our government. Lesley Stahl is a legendary reporter, one of the giants of our time.

The MSM has become irrelevant because it is no longer a "free press". It is an ideological captive of the left that simply spews propaganda and fake news. Indeed, it has become the propaganda arm of the Democratic Party just as NPR is the voice propaganda arm. About 20 years ago, I drove from Ft. Myers, FL to Los Alamos, NM and I listed to NPR during the whole drive noting the nature of comments on Republicans vs Democrats. I found that more than 95 % of the comments on Republicans were negative whereas all comments on Democrats were positive. Some of the bias was subtle but it was, nevertheless, clearly bias. In the past, the MSM controlled the news and opinion that reached the people but this is no longer the case with the development of social media which alloys the president to speak directly to us. The MSM don't like that because they have lost their hold over what we think but they have only themselves to blame. Look at the furor over President Trump's "animals" comments and you will see what I mean.

Claiming journalists "sometimes" get it wrong is a truth and a fact.
Denying that there is overwhelming empirical evidence main stream media has fabricated news, flatly lied, to an extreme "EXTREME" is to disregard mountains of empirical evidence. The greatest crime is not that one knows that mainstream media has set our to destroy President Trump and then pass the lies on as truth, the greatest crime is lying to one's self. (I know majority of the mainstream media stories about Trump are either half truths, fabricated, lies, but I cannot depart from my beliefs or what I wish was the truth, therefore I must disregard anything that threatens my beliefs)

You have done a great service to all of us with this post. It is often stated that a "free press" is a guarantor of democracy and it is hard to argue with that premise. However, our MSM is not "free"; they are ideological captives of the left, which has rendered them irrelevant. I predict that many of the MSM outlets will disappear as more and more Americans realize that they have been subjected to a massive, left-wing propaganda assault. I could add many more examples of the MSM's fake news to your list, including Charlottesville and his recent "animals" comment, but you make the point. What peeves the MSM most is that we are no longer beholden to them for news and information as many on-line sources are available, but they only have themselves to blame. Keep up your good work!

Interesting the democrat party has morphed into leftist /progressive /socialist /Marxist body. The democrats are jumping ship for either independent or the GOP party and these are just as sick of the damage the alphabet news MSN, CNN, ABC, NBC and others of their deceptive ilk as conservatives are.
Ratings from MSN and CNN continues plummeting while Fox News increases. Fox is at times a disappointment as some of the cast are being replaced with liberals, but at least they don't have the track record of the leftist deception. Some foreign news agencies that do not have their skin in the game, no political influence or interests can be good sources along with some Christian news sites. The main stream U. S. media is nothing more than an arm of the leftist party in opposition to our founding fathers intentions of a "free press".

I agree with you completely. When I visit relatives in the UK and in New Zealand, I am appalled at their attitude toward the US but then when one realizes that the ONLY news that they receive is via CNN and BBC it all makes sense. I have sat down with my relatives and gone over fake news stories with them they express disbelief that that sort of thing could happen. They have been brain-washed by their local news outlets that get their feed from CNN and BBC. The leftist influence on the news spreads well beyond our own borders. Again, thank you for your post.
