Did you peruse the stats posted at shooting tracker? The heading is deceptive. To see just how ingenious and logical you really are, I counted the number of shootings listed for 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018.
A mass killing is defined as the murder of 4 or more people by one or more shooters in a single incident at one location.
A spree killing is defined as the murder of 2 or more people by one of more shooters at separate locations with little time lapse between shootings.
Serial killings are defined as the murder of 3 or more people by one or more shooters, but each victim is killed on separate occasions. Unlike mass murderers and spree killers, serial killers usually select their victims, have cooling-off periods between murders, and plan their crimes carefully.
Going back 4 years, here's the tally from shooting tracker:
2015: of the 333 shootings listed, 21 qualify as mass shootings.
2016: of the 383 shootings listed, 23 qualify as mass shootings.
2017: of the 346 shootings listed, 21 qualify as mass shootings.
2018: of the 63 shootings listed, 2 qualify as mass shootings.
However, shooting tracker provides few details about the shootings, and no mention of firearms used, so unless you click the "view incident" or "view source" links posted for each shooting of 4 or more, there is no way to tell whether it was a mass shooting or a spree killing. Unless, of course, you are already informed about the incident. Apparently, shooting tracker is attempting to provide only basic data on
ALL shootings that occurred during a given year. Moreover, in a significant percentage of shootings listed for each year, the number of people killed is
0.
The stats I posted were compiled by Mother Jones via Everytown. This source provides significant data on each shooting, including firearms used. However, due to listings of shootings in which there were only 3 victims (which may have been spree killings), the number of deaths attributed to mass shootings had to be revised. From 1982 to present, 524 people died in mass shootings.
BTW, I am puzzled, but not offended, that in many of your replies to me, you bring up my education, of which you know next to nothing about. I believe I mentioned my major, minor, and final GPA score which compared to what I've learned, the knowledge and experience I've gained in my life, is insignificant. FYI: I was a student in residence at a private university for 6 years. Formal educations are academic, you learn stuff that hopefully will have some real world applications. In my case, I've applied it rather well. At least I can write a coherent sentence, punctuate it properly, and spell words, even big ones like
Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious Plus, I do know the difference between "there", "their" and "they're".
My extensive knowledge and experience in the use, and abuse, of firearms goes back to age 5 when I fired my first shot. Funny thing, throughout all these years, I've never hurt anyone, including myself. My dad was a good teacher.
One more thing, Pete, some mass shooters may be stupid, some are quite intelligent, but ALL of them are, for many reasons, mentally disturbed and/or ravaged by drug abuse.
I always find it amusing when a gun hating, anti-2nd amendment liberal attempts to inform gun owners on what guns we can possess, where, when and how we can shoot them, or mostly why we shouldn't possess guns at all. So, go for it again, Pete, ramp up that phenomenal logic of yours and kick some gunslinger's ass.
