I'm so sick of hearing people on either side of the political divide refer to the others as godless, brainless, antiamerican, etc., ad nauseum. Liberals' and conservatives' values are not antithetical, but our priorities are different. For example, liberals tend to value fairness and caring for those who are vulnerable over safety and security, and conservatives vice-versa. That does not mean liberals oppose maintaining a strong military or conservatives are against compassion. It just means we all need to decide what things are most important to us and what we are willing to give up, i.e. compromise on, in order to support what we value the most. Without compromise, we're all screwed. Degrading or demeaning those with opposing points of view puts defensive walls up between us, and those walls threaten the well-being of us all.

That's sort of true. That's the way it used to be. However starting with the Obama years the left has shifted to hating the military, the police, white people, and American values. Now they want socialism, open borders, unlimited immigration, and free healthcare, free child care, and free tuition. This is all done while the left rejects the concept of personal responsibility as witnessed by all the demand for all this free stuff... which isn't free. I worked my entire life and I still pay taxes, so free, means living off my taxes. This is, for me, the great divide between the new left and my values.

Origin of Left & Right..I have often wondered why it is that Conservatives are called the "right" and Liberals are called the "left".

By chance I stumbled upon this verse in the Bible: Ecclesiastes 10:2 (NIV) - "The heart of the wise inclines to the right, but the heart of the fool to the left."

Thus sayeth the Lord. Amen

It surely can't get any simpler than that.

After years of subscribing to SciAm, I cancelled soon after that braindead Obama entered the international arena and then, like so many other semi-bright rags, began showing its left wing dominance.

What happened to our scientists under the democrat thumb should be a lesson to all. Our new scientists, dependent upon government money will write anything, swear to anything, alter any finding to fit political agendas.

One has to be very careful when reading 'scientific' "findings". That has always been the case but it is hysterically so since the democrats showed us all that they can reinvent truth, "facts" and whatever is necessary to further their socialist goals.

This summation on *brains* is classic. Look at what is being heavily discussed in a so-called scientific report... 'feelings', 'values'.. etc.
Science - REAL science- will not meddle in behaviors or political views, fashion, prayer meetings, democrat party demonstrations.

You'll be happy to know that the origins of the word 'left' are to be found in Middle and Old English words--and even older Dutch, Germanic, and Norse words--meaning idle, weak, or useless... meanings springing, of course, from the fact that most people are right handed, making the left their weaker hand.

The use of left and right to refer to political leanings has its origin in the French Revolution, when, in the French National Assemby of 1789, anti-royalist revolutionaries seated themselves to the presiding officer's left, while conservative, royalist aristocrats sat on his right. Shortly thereafter, French newspapers picked up on the terms and began using left and right to describe liberals and conservatives. The usage caught on and became widespread. It was passed on, and more than 200 years later, we still use those words to characterize people's political ideologies.

Those sure of their righteousness quickly move to their right, leaving the humble and unsure to the left of these self determined righteous.

As I understand things, a magician uses dexterity (and distraction) to hide the workings of "tricks", so as to make them seem mysterious.

I don't think I was trying to be mysterious. I thought my little story clearly pointed to the relative nature of right and left.

When you replied, "It's a riddle, right? I just love riddles. ", I assumed you were joking, given the eye rolling smilie. So to play along, and show of my extensive knowledge of Latin (it extends to the internet where I have access to Google translate), I replied, "A sinister riddle requiring dexterity."

It seems that reply was a mistake because it seems to affirm the idea that my little story was a riddle. To me, it is no riddle.
