Well, where were they when the shooting began? How was the shooter allowed to depart the premises without being confronted?

Snip>>Schools in the Broward district typically have one or two school resource officers, typically Broward County Sheriff deputies who are armed and always on campus.

Did you get that, armed and always on campus?

From a quick read every school in Florida has at least one SRO

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/2018/02/14/police-suspect-fatal-florida-school-shooting-former-student/338874002/

Below is the google search with dozens of links to Florida SRO's...

I have a daughter in Highschool, I am definately for an armed presence at all entrances. At this point the door is locked, but a glance from the secretary, and seeing you are not an alien and they buzz you in. Once in, the halls are empty, and you could just pick a classroom.
At the very least, there should be a secondary set of doors, where you can be viewed and questioned remotely as to the reason for your visit. This tragedy has become all too common, and now we must worry if some wacko might be inspired by the latest. Obviously teaching the kids to crouch behind desks is insufficient. Even the detterants I mentioned will leave gaps. Retired military or law enforcement
officers, standing armed would be most effective. A few armed teachers could also reduce losses.
I cannot begin to fathom this loss, all these children, families, robbed of a future. Those left behind, who will foreever be defined by this event, the before, and after. How many, failed to part on good terms that morning, getting a teenager out the door can be a charged event..Not my kid, Dear Lord, Please not mine. When you think of all the security, that could be paid for, with the money they invest in a swimming pool. You know, the pool, that ruins swimming for most kids, the mandtory breatsrokes. What the hell are we doing?

Perhaps we could figure out how much it would cost to put armed guards in every school and then put a tax on new guns and ammunition to cover the expense.

I would rather round up all leftists, build a wall around them and place armed guards around the perimeter to keep them in their marxist paradise. Just think how nice it would be to have less hatred being preached to our kids daily causing them to hate, feeling disoriented and wanting to harm others and not have to hear the major news networks spewing their leftist propaganda. Yes, I wouldn't mind paying an extra tax for that remedy!!

the swat team wouldn’t know who was who and would likely shoot the teacher. It is asinine to put armed guards in every school in the country the cost would be enormous and steel valuable funds from instruction. The solution is to make it much more difficult for nuts to get ahold of weapons.

All that has to be done is make teachers take firearms courses and have weapons available like fire extinguishers; minimal additional cost.

No, they wouldn't, because the shooting would be over long before the cops arrived. Here's how it goes:

Bad guy shows up at school intending to do some shooting.
Teacher sees bad guy loading up.
Teacher draws sidearm and takes control of bad guy.
Cops show up and take bad guy into custody.
Teacher gets award for saving many lives just by having a gun handy.

Alternative scenario:

Bad guy shows up at school and starts shooting.
Teacher draws sidearm and shoots bad guy.
Cops show up and call coroner.
Teacher gets award for saving many lives just by having gun handy.

Current scenario;

Bad guy goes on rampage across school, once again, and shoots anyone in sight.
Cops show up after the shootings, once again, and ask what happened.
News media pick up the story and, once again, the headlines sell papers.
Good people across the nation, once again, are shocked by the carnage.
Talking heads, once again, go on TV to highlight the evils of firearms.
Politicians, once again, float the possibilities of 'common sense gun controls' because 'the children'.

Sensible people, once again, point out that if just one of those victims had been armed, this would not have been permitted to happen, while pointing at the Target rich environment 'Gun Free Zone' signs across the campus.

Nobody listens.

Repeat 'current scenario' ad nauseum.

That's what really happens.

Searching backpacks would not have stopped this murderer, from bringing his LONG RIFLE,into school.Im thinking,a 12 foot fence, completely surroundling the school property, with metal detectors,at each entrance point.should be required.

Um, don't schools already have fences around them? I think they do but I never actually walked all the way around a school making sure it went all the way around. I really think they do.

I really do not have an answer. I really think we need E-Verify. Maybe we can at least find out where these murderers come from. Who supplied the guns. Their state of mind. Who they run with would help.

Well it seems most come from broken families and are loaners. Most of the warning signs are in their online presence.

Is there a single identifiable event such as yesterday's horrific one where the SRO did anything but call for back up? I've been researching this since last night...haven't found it yet.

Public schools in populous areas already routinely have police cruisers on at the school all day every day. So swat teams are just a step up.

I think that there should be both........ that would have been the only chance of stopping the senseless slaughter by that totally evil person! The only deterrent to an evil person armed with a gun is a trained ‘good’ person armed with a gun!

How do I know where they were or the shooter able to depart? All I know is that the School Resource Officer is a duly appointed police officer armed and ready to confront the worst. That's why they are there--to deal with the worst students a school can have.

Then why didn't the SRO deal with the shooter?

You bet there should be armed guards at every door and there should be metal detectors. There should also be active shooter drills and a lock box in every teachers room with a gun in it and the had better know how to use it. Apparently you don't have children (big surprise). There is no amount of money that I would put before the lives of my grandchildren!!!! Putz!!

They are stationed in ISS but will be any place there is trouble in the school--that's their job, to deal with unruly students--and depending on the size of the school there will be two or more. My wife's high school has two and SWAT routinely drills in the school at night so they are familiar with the layout. It's because the school and city was ready that only 17 students died.

Only 17??? Only 17???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
