As a young man, I was an ardent Christian. At age fourteen, I was leading Sunday evening services in our fundamentalist church, appointed to do so by our pastor and approved by the church board. The Bible was always at my right hand and I could provide a ready verse to answer most any question.
Then one day, I was summoned to the church in the middle of the week. I was pleased to be regarded in such manner that my presence was requested at a special meeting. Beaming with pride, I entered the sanctuary and took a seat as I was directed.
It was only moments before it became clear that my presence there had an ominous tone to it. I had been summoned, not as a valued member of the congregation but as the accused at an inquisition. I had no idea why I was there and no one was explaining anything. I had arrived in time for the sentencing.
I was summarily expelled from the church along with the entire family of a friend. The pastor's parting words to us were that God grants the power to his ministers to pray for the removal of 'thorns in his side'. I was sixteen at that time, a dedicated Christian, and I had just been threatened with Heavenly retribution for a crime I was still ignorant of having committed.
It was several days later when I finally learned of the terrible deeds I had reportedly taken part in.
My friend and another boy, also a friend, had collected several empty liquor bottles and, as a prank had placed them on the parsonage outside front stairs. When the pastor awoke in the morning and found the collection in his doorway, he was furious. He established an investigation, uncovered the part played by my co-ejectee and under pressure to disclose his partner in this crime, my friend named me.
If I was truly innocent, why was I named? Because the actual perpetrator of the crime, the coconspirator in the dastardly deed was the steady boyfriend of the minister's oldest daughter. Had my friend named him, the repercussions on that relationship would have been devastating and he didn't want that responsibility.
I eventually was allowed to rejoin the church but the experience broke my hold on religious devotion. I was then free to consider issues my previous mindset would not allow.
The general behavior of professing Christians, like too many of those posting here, was remarkably un-Christlike. They demonstrated a cavalier disregard for the admonitions of Christ to humility, temperance in all things and service to God and fellow man. They were arrogant, abrasive and discourteous to the point of being ready and willing to cast the first stone and relishing the act with a viciousness that has also become far too common here. Too many of them seem to view Christ's sacrifice as nothing more than a 'get out of Hell free card'. As long as their prayers include a mandatory mea culpa each night, they can continue their selfish and abusive behavior with abandon.
I have abandoned Christianity because it has become a jealous hag where once it was a powerful warrior of the Word. The Shepard's flock is now mostly ravenous wolves in sheep's garb, pretenders whose aim is no longer to serve God and fellow man but to chastise, abuse and belittle. They personify the Pharisee's prayer...
No, not all Christians behave poorly. The church's foundation is still solid but the structure is in serious need of renovation. Meanwhile, I continue to look for substance in this universe but find very little.

Your story reminds me of an incident in my youth that I have never forgotten. I believe I was in the third or fourth grade when a friend and playmate invited me to attend his church with him because they were having a chicken dinner and thought I would enjoy it. I did, in fact, attend church with him the following Sunday. I listened to the preacher for about an hour and a half, trying not to fall asleep from boredom, and eventually the sermon ended.
The preacher then announced that "I know we promised you a chicken dinner, but all we have left are the bones." He then had the ushers hand out a candy bar called "Chicken Bones" and I departed rather disappointed. The thought came to me that if this preacher would lie about a nonexistent chicken dinner, he would likely lie about most anything else. I still believe he was a liar to this day.
My attitude toward churches and preachers changed markedly that day. As I grew up and later married, my wife was concerned that I didn't attend church, so I related my story to her. She, being a very determined person that came from a staunch Democratic family, began looking for a church that I might consider going to, as she wanted me to take her and our children to church. Well, she found one, and with some apprehension I agreed to take the family there.
The preacher was a younger man, played a nice guitar, sang well, spoke well, was somewhat interesting, and good with children. After a couple of months, I decided to take the family there again, but my wife informed me that the preacher I had seen before was no longer there. I asked what happened to him. She told me he had been fired because he was caught having an affair with the organist. We didn't attend there again, and later on she began taking the children to another church, without me, which was fine since I believed my children should at least be exposed to some form of religion.
As I got older, I rarely attended any organized religious productions, and still believe they are just "shows" to promote money to support the preacher and some of the elders. I was never able to change her politics either, and she remained a Democrat until the day she died. In the beginning I claimed to be a Democrat to appease her side of the family, but as I became more educated I changed to a registered Republican. Further education, two degrees later, and serious thought caused me to become an Independent because of the gross similarity between Democrats and Republicans, and as I learned to follow the money I found that both parties were as crooked as a dogs' hind leg. Having listened to the "Big Boys" tell me that if I voted for Goldwater the USA would go to Hell and take me with it; I balked. I voted for Goldwater! Unfortunately the "Big Boys" were right - - I voted for Goldwater and the USA has been getting worse ever since!
I still believe in a Supreme Being, a split between creation and evolution, and there are now three parties; the Democrats, the Republicans, and the RINOs. RINOs, of course, are simply Democrats who have wormed their way into the Republican Party to weaken it by their Socialist/Progressive obstructionism. Until we rid ourselves of the "Establishment" by draining the swamp, killing the alligators and piranhas, revive the Patriotism and Love of Country, and the limited Constitutional Republic, we are going to continue to fight until we either die or become enslaved by Communism.
As to President Trumps' statement about the unpatriotic BLM type ball player who won't stand up for his country during the playing of the National Anthem, he is correct - - although this putz has a cherished Constitutional right to disrespect the flag of our country, and all who have fought and died for it and his "right" to exercise his freedom of speech regardless of the poorly chosen timing of the event, "the Son-Of-A-Bitch should be fired!" He can do as he damned well pleases on his own time, but not while he is supposed to be representing an "example" to the youth of our country nationwide! I have boycotted National Sports for over 50 years, and this act was just another additional reason to continue to do so! These damned ball players are not gods, they are no better than anyone else, they are excessively pampered and over privileged, and they are grossly overpaid! If their owners and managers allow this type of action to continue, they are no better! Being wealthy is no excuse for their lack of common sense! Go President Trump!!!
