Over the years, The NY Times has eulogized more Communists on its front page than one could shake a hammer and sickle at. The latest Red to be granted this dubious honor is "folk singer" Pete Seeger. Seeger was once an actual member of the US Communist Party, back when the Party took its orders from Stalin's Moscow.

During the 1930's, he fervently supported the genocidal Communist side during the Spanish Civil War. When World War II broke out in 1939, he opposed U.S. intervention. But the moment that Germany and Seeger's beloved Soviet Union began fighting, Seeger switched his tune and supported U.S. interventionism!

In 1957, he was indicted for contempt of Congress. The smart-ass Marxist had openly mocked Congress while refusing to answers questions pertaining his Communist affiliations as well as the Communist subversion of America's music and entertainment industry. Later sentenced to 10 years, the protected traitor's conviction was soon overturned on appeal.

In 1960, the San Diego school board told him that he could not play a scheduled concert at a high school unless he signed an oath pledging that the concert would not be used to promote a Communist agenda or an overthrow of the government. Seeger refused! The the American Civil Liberties Union obtained an injunction against the school district, allowing the concert to go on as scheduled.

Throughout his life, and well into his old age, Seeger supported left wing "causes" such as the deliberate losing of the Vietnam War, Environmentalism, "Civil Rights", and Occupy Wall Street. The old Red bastard even played at Obongo's 2009 inauguration. Not surprisingly, the old "anti war" activist never once complained about fellow Lefty Obongo's warmongering and Predator Drone strikes! Naturally, Obongo memorialized Seeger for "standing up for what's right."

Maybe now he will find the answer to his lifelong question...why can't we all just get along...as long as someone else pays for it...

Obviously you are not a fan of Pete Seeger. He did however have a lot of American fans, including:

President Obama
President Clinton
Johnny Cash
Emmylou Harris
Dolly Parton (she sang his composition "Turn, Turn, Turn").
Bruce Springsteen
Bob Dylan
John Mellencamp
The Byrds
Smothers Brothers
Eddy Vedder
Dave Matthews.

He is also the oldest American Grammys winner.

Brian-one can be a fan of the music he played but not necessarily a fan of His. I would have to believe that none of the above would favor Pete being a communist. Would you ? Good Luck America !!!

I'm split on him. Some of the very first music I listened too as a kid (5 years old). I'd sneak down stairs as a kid at 4-5 in the morning and listen to him, the Weavers, Curly O'Brien and whatever else was on.

No. I didn't favor his communist involvement, nor do I think that most of his fans did. The man did, however live a pretty good life. Most people don't know it but he went to New England boarding schools and attended Harvard before he dropped out to pursue a career in folk music. He always rooted for the underdog. He did acknowledge the errors of his ways in his past support of the USSR. People change. Even Harry Blackmun, formerly of the KKK became a supreme court justice, very committed to civil rights.

I think I said fans. I don't think Pete had any groupies. I don't think he endured the deafening adulation of the Beatles admirers. Most banjo pickers, no matter how good, usually don't generate that type of response.

When one devotes ones entire life to an ideology one must be prepared to accept it's flaws or reject it when it proves overbearing or obviously inferior and damaging. The USSR was, discounting Red China for the moment, a monumental example of the fallacy of global social equality. As much as I admired some of the man's music and passion, it's difficult to get past his continuing, lifelong emphasis on reduction of the individual to a single state of sameness.

He may have recognized the horror of the USSR. He didn't though, after all see the real misery of the social/communist ideology. He was after all somewhat disconnected by his wealth. I do hope though that he finds his kumbaya. He was not a bad man.

An emphasis on a "single state of sameness" was not my take-away from Pete Seeger' life. Being on the "same team" to me, does not mean everyone should be the same flavor...that's the whole point of embracing diversity.

Differing points of view philosophically I suppose. We agree though that he was not a bad dude regardless of his politics. I wish him a pleasant journey...

R.I.P. Pete / most of us, ( the sane ones anyway,), will miss you.
