Been up about half an hour. Looks like we're dropping back into the ice age, at least, temporarily. High winds, low temperatures, and nasty 'chill factor'.

How is it with you, Searching? Are you up and about?

Rather well, after 13 hours of sleep!! Must have needed it. Sorry to bust your bubble, but I don't think the "chill" is so temporary. Looks like there are several Arctic "surges" to come. They are talking snow for us possibly Wednesday. Ewwww. I have taken to wearing my thermal hunting bibs ALL the time, outside, inside. I have low blood pressure (how, beats me!!) and I rarely am warm any way. Summer time, hurry up!!

Thermal clothing, of any kind, is standard wear for me during the winter months. "An ounce of prevention...etc."

A lot to look forward to this week. I get to pay my property
taxes! I pay about 1/4 of what I paid for the same quality of home and property in Austin. That is some consolation.
I believe taxes are necessary for a civilized society...I just am not sure how "civilized" we should strive to be, .

Oh my!! I pay property taxes in two states, three counties. Must say the rural property taxes are FAR less than the burb tax. Taxes here -- they are so "ecumenical" -- you can pay monthly if you like, if you are behind, you can do it in installments, but the "norm" is June and December, halvsies. Civilized? They have given up striving for such a thing here -- if they ever did!! Hey, we still have a lot of gravel roads. It makes driving creative -- particularly now with all this freezing and infrequent thawing. Talk about slip sliding away!! Yes, my chauffeur would have to have nerves of steel. Hope AuntiE had that in mind when she chose mine.

Do you have property by choice, in other counties, states?
Or, is it that you can't sell that property? I retired to get out from under as much responsibility as possible. I do not care to be a landlord, or estate handler...to any degree.

Texas roads, for the most part, are very good. We do have
backroads that are sometimes gravel, but they are used very little.

Good luck with "Kibbles & Bits". He is cute, though! :-D

Different states, different counties within the Commonwealth, even. I "let a piece go" literally just disappear -- in yet another state -- my father's family a bit ticked off -- but only so many balls can I keep juggling in the air. Hey, none of them thought it necessary to pitch in. Only one piece -- the one in MD burbs, do I really want to see go away -- yesterday -- but one son, wife, and grandchild of mine, reside there. As soon as they have saved up enough money to buy a house -- it is GONE!!

Our gravel roads -- be forewarned -- if you should ever have the misfortune to be lost on one of them, well traveled, odd bits of gravel strewn paths "almost" wide enough for two vehicles, and almost EVERYONE who travels them does so in a manner that would make X-sports fans really proud!! Shoulders to bail on?? Perish the thought!! Deep, water worn ditches would be more like it. I shall hope that my "new" chauffeur has grace and grit when chauffeuring me about. Yes, where IS my chauffeur??

So good and reassuring that AuntiE has made sure that you report as promised, especially since they are calling for the possibility of snow tomorrow night!!

My only real experience with such road conditions are with our occasional forays into the backwoods of Northeastern New Mexico, when we visit old friends up in the mountains.
Texas roads, as I said, are pretty well maintained. The oil and gas industry finances a lot of said maintenance, in return for generous tax benefits. Seems fair enough.

As for Family estate matters, I know to what you are referring. Most Family/friends are quick to take their 'piece of the pie', so long as there is no cost or responsibilities involved, for them. That seems to parallel the attitudes of most U.S. citizens. They, too often, appear as irresponsible/incompetent as the government is viewed.

And, few good deeds go unpunished.

Well, I hope my new chauffeur is also good at stacking wood!! If I seem to delay my replies, it is because I am multitasking -- stacking the wood that my dear hubby seems to be bringing up by the tractor loads in a panic over the impending cold seeping menacingly towards us. Please, NO more split pipes. Hey, I've got my hunter's bibs to keep me warm, but arctic swims, not looking forward to any more of those.

This will be my last day of replies for quite a spell-I fly out to St. Louis at pm tomorrow, then a couple three day's there and on to
Baltimore, new job starts on the fourth. I'll miss all of you and our conversations and banter, but will try to check in once in a while to keep Auntie in line(yeah, right!) and the boys, i will pass them my moral support and condolences if needed!
The beginnings of the new job are going to be, harrowing, to say the least. The work load looks daunting and insurmountable right now, but, it will slowing wane and then I may find some time to kick back for a few moments and catch up with you.
As of right now, I am planning on coming home in march for spring break, but you all knows about "the best laid plans" thing, it usually never turns out the way we want them to.
I'll be in and out all day/night, so catch you all on the fly.

Safe journey, be warm, again my condolences to your friend. Won't be the same w/o your wisecracking "good mornin' troops". Spring break, not that "far" away. Hope you will be able to come up for air from time to time, even if it's just a quick look at the Inner Harbor in Baltimore.

Well, Baltimore is my home base temporarily, as my job is in Falls Church, VA. Eventually I will find a quaint abode there and be as close as possible to my dungeon(work). Auntie has already put soup out on the porch for me, so I will invade her domicile ASAP, and recover some "hominess" from her and UncleE. Hopefully, this new adventure will be a good maneuver on my part. Being away from home, my wife, kids, grandkids, and my sanity will be the hard part to deal with in the beginning.

 :?

I echo Searching's sentiments, 77. May your friend and his
Family find eternal peace.

While in Baltimore, do not fail to visit one of the great MLB ballparks...in Camden Yards. Also, while there, take the time to go into the Babe Ruth Museum, right across the street. I remember Boog Powell's eatery in the right field vicinity is a great place to have lunch, while watching the game. Be careful not to become a 'raven lunatic'. One only has to see what it did to AuntiE for reason to worry!

But, be careful! There a lots of places to get 'crabs' while in the adopted hometown of Edgar Allen Poe.
