Valedictorian Gets His Speech Cut Short by Principal… Then Jimmy Kimmel Invites Him on Show
https://youtu.be/KFuU32EGUJo High school graduations are a time where students at the top of their class get to share a few encouraging words with the rest of their school’s graduates about the future and about how far they have come together.
Unfortunately, there often stories of school speakers who get into trouble for wanting to talk about God, but some are shut down for other reasons as well.
The valedictorian of Wyoming Area Secondary Center in Exeter, Pennsylvania, got shut down during his speech in June 2017 for talking about his school’s politics, The Washington Post reported.
Peter Butera, 18, who was also the class president, decided to go off script during his speech to highlight how the principal of the school, Jon Pollard, had shot down all the ideas that the student government had had during Butera’s time in high school.
While Butera was temporarily shut down during his speech, he ended up gaining internet fame and reaching a much wider audience than anyone thought possible.
“At our school, the title of class president can more accurately be class party planner. Student council’s main obligation is to paint signs every week,” Butera said, deviating from his administration-approved remarks while Pollard frowned.
“Despite some of the outstanding people in our school, a lack of a real student government combined with the authoritative attitude that a few teachers, administrators and board members have prevented students from truly developing as true leaders,” he explained.
