Late Thursday evening, news broke that TransCanada, the company behind the formerly rejected Keystone XL pipeline, will not be required to use U.S. steel to construct the dirty tar sands pipeline from Alberta, Canada through the U.S. to refineries in the Houston area. This is in spite of the repeated pledges by President Trump—including at Tuesday's speech before a joint session of Congress—that it will be built with "American steel."

Earlier this week, TransCanada delayed its $15 billion Investor State Dispute Settlement suit under NAFTA over President Barack Obama's rejection of the pipeline until March 27, the same day that the final permitting decision for Keystone XL is due. It has been speculated that the lawsuit was suspended rather that dropped to ensure that TransCanada was not required to use U.S. steel despite Trump's public statements that it would be.

President Trump has sought to portray himself as some sort of master negotiator, but he clearly needs to spend more time in an apprenticeship. Just days ago, Trump pledged before the country and Congress that the Keystone XL pipeline that he was forcing on this country would be made with American steel, but instead, he was outmaneuvered by a foreign company that wants to use imported steel.

The only winner of this "deal" is TransCanada, which is using a $15 billion threat under NAFTA's deeply flawed corporate tribunal system to outmaneuver Trump and push a dirty and dangerous pipeline across our country.

TransCanada's success over Trump is what happens when you have an administration stacked with fossil fuel billionaires and a trade deal that enables corporate polluters to push their agenda at will. Keystone XL is a disaster waiting to happen for our economy, our health and our climate, which is why it was rejected and must remain so.

What the hell do seasonal migrant workers have to do with the pipeline? These people are not the problem anyway, and they never have been. Most are here legally and go home at the end of the season.

Since the pipeline was already started, it was not NEW. Jobs are coming from finishing the job and not starting a new one.

And just what you have them do with the miles of material that's all ready been approved by the government back in 2010? Maybe hide it in your backyard or better yet put it where the sun don't shine!

Even with President Trump signing a bill to encourage the use of US Steel, there are not that many options available as your source shows. Indeed, even the meme attached to this thread, I find the information may be somewhat inaccurate/misleading. The report the data was lifted from is a product of the Partnership for a New American Economy, a pro-immigration reform group started by Michael Bloomberg and Rupert Murdoch.

perma-get over it. The pipeline is a done deal. As relates to the steel, we may not have the capacity to produce what is needed at this time. Our steel output capabilities have been decimated and it will take time to get production back up. The pipeline may not be able to be delayed for as long as it will take for us to provide our own steel. As for our people not showing up for work, all we need to do is cut off their welfare check or food stamps until they do show up. The democrats have created a class of dependency with benefits as lucrative, if not better, than those which a person can earn if he/she works. it is merely a matter of readjusting priorities and requiring that all able bodied people ,who can work, do so in order to get assistance. The governor of Maine reduced his welfare rolls from 12,000+ down to 2,000 in a matter of months. He merely required that all able bodied recipients show up for work part time for two or three days weekly. The former recipients chose to give up their welfare checks instead of working. We have the manpower, they just have become too lazy. America First !!!

So the millions of illegal aliens coming across the Mexican border for the last 50 years are all farm workers? Who knew? And all of the Spanish speaking people working in restaurants, meat packing plants, factories, and working on utility construction crews, were born in America? I am glad you straightened me out.

The keystone XL will benefit Canada, China & Koch Industry's... its a crap product that's costly to refine... Seems that Trump Is a good deal maker for the big boys... if American labor & materials aren't used Keystone is a waste of time ... after what Trump said last week on US steel labor I hope this post is wrong... maybe its time to see some tax returns after all... I roll with trust but verify... wealthy people tend to be greedy...I'm still trying to wrap my head around the concept of solid gold heads myself...

As usual stupid is stupid, big difference between legal and ILLEGAL. this country has millions of LEGAL MEXICANS, it's the illegals that are being put out. Being born in the USA doesn't make you legal, it's too being born to legal parents.

That oil won't be sold here so who cares what it costs to refine, 90% of it won't be refined here but sent of barges likely sent to China, China will pay for that oil. In turn sweet will remain here to be refined here and sold here. So your saying no pipe will ever need to replaced, ever? With that pipe line put in all *NEW* pipe will be US made. Canada and the US tend to make money plus shipping docks tend to make good money from this. Being 20 trillion in debt this a win that Obama wouldn't even look at.

Every once in awhile something happens that causes law enforcement to swoop down. Some kind of crime and suddenly 5 illegals are carted off. Funny how often that happens since Trump came to town. Can't remember it ever happening under Obama.
