I can't find any credit to Reagan for saying "deficits don't matter" although I heard that with my own ears.

What I can find attributed to Reagan was, when asked about the deficits that sprung from his tax cuts, he said:

"I don't worry about deficits. They're big enough to take care of themselves."

I really don't know which one is worse. My guess is the second, which completely dismisses the harm his structural deficits caused.

As for the context of Dick Cheney's comments on the deficits, I haven't a clue. I remember the reporting on the comment, but I can't say in what context it was said. but, say Cheney meant that deficits don't matter with voters. Is this a cynical thing to say when you are allegedly a fiscal conservative? And polls taken at the time show that voters WERE concerned about the debt and annual deficits. The polls showed 70% to 80% said the debt and deficits WERE a problem.

My only point is that Republicans seem only to discover the debt and annual deficits when a Democrat is in the White House. And the blame between Congress and the WH changes with what party is in control of each. All I'm saying is.......

Your charts showed that interest on the debt has doubled since 1988 and gone up about 5%, or a half billion dollars, since Obama took office. Thanks for the info. I was wrong. But the figures still speak for themselves.

HAve a good New Year Dennis.

Actually there were many conservatives who spoke out against Bush spending . I can provide you will links to articles if you wish.

Now for your Reagan quote

am not worried about the deficit. It is big enough to take care of itself. Joke at the Gridiron Club annual dinner. (24 March 1984)

You obviously found the quote and knew the source was a joke from a dinner right?? Yes or No?

[The reply saying Balanced bugets and reduced deficits are bad for democrats who want to attract voters who want government freebies is biased and just plain wrong.quote=Hungry Freaks]OK Dennis, so the INTEREST on the national debt in 2008 was $451 billion, half of the TOTAL national debt of about $900 billion was in 1981 when Ronald Wilson "deficits don't matter" Reagan took office. Does that make you feel any better? And, yes, I hear the man utter those words himself. He said the annual deficits "would kill entitlements for the next hundred years."

I'm not surprised that those who seek to make the man a myth would want to hide those remarks. But he said them.

Cheney's remarks on no less damning.

It seems deficits and the national debt are only important when Democrat is in the White House. And when there's good news on deficit spending and the debt, it's not the Democrat in the White House who is responsible for the good news, it's the Republican-conrtolled Congress. Or when there's good news on the debt and annual deficits, it's the Republican in the White House and not the Democrat-controlled Congress. Having it both ways.

How is it wrong? Democrats attract voters with freebies. Its been that way since FDR. Pelosi is already planning a new one should Dems win back House. She wants some sort of Childcare program funded by Government for working mothers.

A childcare program for working mothers is a good thing. Times have changed and the rent is too damn high. Republicans might attract more voters if they grew a heart.

The Bush tax cuts that were supposed to expire after 10 years added quite a bit to our debt. Repubs want to keep them for the "job creators" How is that having a brain? I have not recieved a tax return in 30 years. I pay taxes. No unemployment no government freebies for me and I wouldn't take a freebie either. The burdon of this country is carried on the backs of the workers. They are the first to starve and the first to die. The worker fights the wars and is then dumped on because someone with all the power has a brain but no heart.

And these workers are paying for the freebies you support. They carry the burden.

It looks like social programs are something you don't support. Well you do your thing I'll do mine. I think of a vision of shanty towns and beggars if we turn our backs in favor of selfishness. Would you deny food to hungry children? Homes for the elderly? medicine for the sick? for the grace of God this could have been you. the freebies you support. They carry the burden.[/quote]

I never said I didn't support all programs. I do not support expanding into more and would like to see some of them reduced. Apparently they aren't working. We have record homelessness, record numbers on food stamps and Shantytowns by the names of Detroit and Compton and Camden etc.

Eventually you run out of other peoples money.

So how do you propose improving or society and ridding the USA of poverty?

We can start by giving them jobs and stop pandering to illegal aliens.

There has to be jobs to give or do you suggest the government become the employer for the down trodden masses?

If we don't have enough jobs why is Obama pushing for amnesty?
