Why try to protect a neighbor who wants to take our guns away from us?

The purpose of life is to share your gifts!

Ralph, My neighbor is a "lefty" of sorts (Obama bumper stickers, gung-ho socialized medicine, "guns
should be banned", etc.). So last week I put this sign up in my yard after one of his anti-gun rants at a neighborhood cocktail party. The sign wasn't up more than an hour before he called the police and wanted them to make me take down the sign. Fortunately, the officer politely informed him that it was not their job to take such action without a court order and that he had to file a complaint "downtown" first, which would be reviewed by the city attorney to see if it violated any city, county, or state ordinances, which, if there was a violation, a court order would be sent to the offending party (me) to "remove the sign in seven days".

After several weeks he was informed that the sign was legal (by a quarter of an inch) and there was
nothing the city could do, which obviously made him madder. I tried to smooth things over by inviting him to go shooting with me and my friends at the hunt club but that seemed to make him even more angry. I then asked him if he wanted to go to a Tea Party rally but again he declined my outreach efforts to bring about a better understanding between political and social opponents.

I am at a loss as how to reconcile our long relationship (notice I did not say friendship) . . . any suggestions would be welcome. Anyway, that's life in our neck of the woods, how's about yours?

This is about a man who placed a sign in his yard to help his next door neighbor, a liberal gun hating "friend" that stated that his neighbor's house is not armed and he promises not to use his guns to protect the neighbor. The neighbor tried and tried to get the city government to force him to take down the sign, but to no avail. Shouldn't all us of the gun owning group let people know that we won't protect those who want to take our guns away from us? I really do believe that is something we need to do.

oldroy - I totally agree. However, even though we agree on this, if this individual was being attacked and was my neighbor I would still come to his rescue as I think you probably would. Thats just how our kind roll. It would probably piss him off to no end knowing you just saved him and his families lives. But oh well. At least he would still have the ability to get over it.

Yep. Let's separate Americans further. Why not ask the military to only protect the rights of those that support them wholeheartedly? Of course, that would leave most of the Congress out in cold, but so what?

Let's have liberal ambulances and conservative ambulances, so that no paramedic has to care for someone not of their ilk. Then, we need to ensue that the police don't bother responding to addresses where they know the folks are armed and capable of dealing with problems on their own. That would save those homeowners some coin, they needn't invest in police forces, since they will never need them.

To my mind, America needs to become LESS ridiculous, but we seem to have gotten that completely backwards.

As a Christian, I would protect his family's life and limb. Period.

No way in hell would I help the guy! He sounds like the type who would sue if you entered his property with a gun. He has made his bed, let him lie in it. I would give the police the best description of the perpetrator I could and that's it. Remember you have no authority to be on his property. And if you haven't been sued, I can assure you it wouldn't be fun. And lets not forget that the victim of your shooting or his family will sue you also. If you enjoy going to Court, protect the guy.

I want to point out to you that the criminals in this scene would be the invaders and they would be dealt with by law authorities in ways that would appear to be gentle compared to what would happen to anyone who tried to interfere with a gun in hand. That is plenty of reason not to help the bastard out.
