By age 62, it will cost you tens of thousands of dollars (depending on how much your retired pay is and how old you are now, of course). 1% compounded DOES add up!

I agree that 1% could add up, depending on your retired rank. However, there are no guarantees that congress will always approve cost of living raises each year for retired or disabled veterans. You cannot compound the interest on pay that you would never receive in the first place

Got an idea for you Ron,

Three years ago, I got my family up and took them to a Veterans Hospital to visit and thank those who suffered more than myself.

It started one holiday and now it is every Veterans Day, Memorial Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. My family has a blast with those crusty Vets (I have to admit, there are SOME crustier than myself)

Maybe those wanting company or wanting to give thanks can visit your local Vets locations and spend time with brothers/sisters in arms.

I heard that 67 Senator's voted on a bill that would take 1% of all military retired pay. the majority of them were Democrats and about 6 or 7 Republican's can any one shed more light on this matter?? Why do they always pick on the military, social security and medicare, why don't congress take a 1 % pat cut since they make a lot more that above mention people???

It has a bigger impact, but I think you already knew that...

It was part of the deal worked out by a Republican House member and a Democrat Senator to fund the government for the next two years and avoid a shutdown. Their thinking was that militray retirees under 62 can still get another job.

because the conservatives in the congress disallowed most items from being considered when they figure the cost of living .

I have read all of these lies, blaming President Obama for these cuts...Let me enlighten all of you Fox fed minded people...President Obama has not cut a damned thing...Congress controls the pay cuts, and always have, and then the bill goes to the senate. From there, if the bill passes In the senate, then it goes to President Obama to sign, or not sign.
But, all of that has changed now. If the congress decides to do stupid shit, like cut vet's pay, shut the government down, or whether to raise the debt ceiling, or not to raise the debt ceiling.
Because as anybody with a brain knows, that if stupid shit happens pertaining to money, check your Republican buddies.
Congress controls what gets paid, or not paid. That is why I can't understand why Republicans, try to accuse the President for our debt problems.
Wake up and smell the coffee!!
