You are correct in one thing. The problem is not guns per se but the ease of access to them by mentally unstable people. Radical Islam and Mental Instability are probably interchangeable terms but then so is Radical Christianity or Judaism, Hinduism or any other radical "ism". As far as the Gun Ban lobby they should just get realistic because that horse left the stable a long time ago. America is awash in guns of all types and as others have pointed out criminals and the criminally insane will always find a way to get possession. The idea of transforming America into a European state with no guns allowed and concomitantly no shootings is just wishful nonsense. The truth is people who are prone to commit violence will do it with a knife, a hatchet, a car or a home made bomb. There is probably no way to completely eliminate gun violence in America but it could be substantially reduced if all sides starting listening and acknowledging the fears of the other side. As for the idea that a "good guy" with a gun could ameliorate a mass shooting I am skeptical. Experienced enforcement agents report how difficult it is to respond with deadly force in the confusion of any kind of shooting let alone a mass shooting where there are panicked people milling around and the shooter is mingled and does not present a clear target. The idea would only have merit if there were people (volunteers) willing to undergo specialized training in this field along the lines of the original Sky Marshal program. The NRA should also be a participant in any solution instead of allowing itself to become a political mouthpiece that attracts fringe groups with extreme religious, racial and political views who promote unwarranted hysteria over gun control. The accumulation of fear spawns the rationale of mob mentality and extra judicial actions that do not solve the problem and do not make us safer.
