Verse of the Day for Monday May 30th, 2016:

The God of our fathers raised Jesus from the dead — whom you had killed by hanging him on a tree. — Acts 5:30

Thoughts on Today's Verse....

Peter is making clear that his faith in Jesus didn't just begin with Jesus. It began with the Patriarchs, the great Jewish fathers. The God who blessed them also raised Jesus from the dead, even though Jesus had been executed in the most heinous and degrading way possible for a faithful Jew — he was nailed to a cross, something that was both illegal and a sign of being cursed under Jewish Law. He raised Jesus from the dead and exalted him and made him our Savior and our Lord. Praise God!

My Prayer...

Thank you, dear Father, for showing your power over evil, sin, hate, jealousy, and death. In the name of Jesus, my Lord and Savior, I offer my praise and thanksgiving. Amen.

The Thoughts and Prayer on Today's Verse are written by Phil Ware.

"Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever."- 1 John 2:15-17 KJV

BD, I know you post for the love of country, so my Memorial Day Prayer I add here.

Prayer for 5/30/16

Memorial Day, what does it mean to you? What does it mean to our children and grandchildren? Once upon a time, in a land called America, families gathered, they went to church together, they would go to the cemeteries and decorate the graves of their loved ones. Afterward they would have a picnic of tasty, home-cooked food. They may go watch a parade, or go to the band shelter and listen to patriotic music. The children ran and played, rather than sitting around with their x-box or cell phone.

That was a magical time when people were full of hope for the future, where has it gone? Was it truly just a fairy tale? Has it disappeared because we, the older generation, became so self-absorbed with 'getting ahead' we forgot to pass our history on to the children. We thought we were doing it for them, to give them an easier life. Ah Yes, an easier life - too easy, they have become the 'Snowflake Generation.' They are now so sensitive they MELT at the sound of something they perceive as offensive.

Dear Lord, have we lost the battle for freedom, have we lost sight of Your intended purpose for mankind? We are guilty of not telling them, guilty of not keeping alive the flame of freedom. How will they know if we haven't told them? Your Word tells us Romans 10:14 "But how can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them?" So too, that is true of freedom.

Forgive us our sins, Lord. On this Memorial Day, we ask You to look upon our Nation, to once again return and bless us with Your presence. Let us learn the lessons from the Old Testament, when the Israelis fell away from You, You withdrew from them and evil leaders stepped in. Open our eyes to see, Lord; open our ears to hear, Lord; and open our mouths to speak, Lord. This, our prayer, for Memorial Day, a day of remembrance. In Jesus name we pray. Amen

Early Morning Observations for 5/31/16

Very early this morning, Bear and I went out on the deck. I was greeted with the light of a shimmering crescent moon. Wispy clouds hung around it, as to frame its beauty. Fireflies were flitting through the trees. As I sat there, appreciating the serenity of this early morning hour, a brilliant falling star soared across the sky. I made a wish. Do you remember, 'I wish I may, I wish I might, I wish I have the wish I wish tonight?' Seems like long ago and far away.

Off in the distance a dog was barking at some night creature. Whatever the creature was it was drawing the dog deeper into the woods, as I could hear the barking grow louder. The trees stood still, dark, and foreboding, hiding secrets of the night. I finished my coffee, and asked the Lord to be with me today, to guide and protect me. I asked Him to be with our Nation, to come back, to once again make it acceptable to pray and mention His name everywhere.

Last night I was reminded of the mysterious ways in which God works. I read these words, "Almighty God has used ordinary men (sometimes extremely flawed men) to accomplish His will." Is He using Trump* as His vehicle to restore America? I am reminded of King Nebuchadnezzar in Daniel, he ends up helping the Israelites. In Daniel 4:3 he says: "How great are His signs, how mighty His wonders! His kingdom is an eternal kingdom; His dominion endures from generation to generation."

King Nebuchadnezzar was a Babylonian King, an unlikely ally for Israel. Sometimes I feel fellow Americans are America's enemies. Maybe we need to examine ourselves, our hopes, our desires. "Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." It is time to treasure our Christian Nation, and be in sincere prayer for the God of our fathers to return. That is my prayer for today. In Jesus name I ask. Amen

*Trump, I have not been a wild fan of his, he is a shrewd businessman, maybe he is the one to restore America. I don't know, but I trust God knows, and if we pray He will show us. That I will trust in.

Trump would not be my first choice either, but then again, neither was Reagan and he seemed to bring back what this country needed at that time.

Verse of the Day for Tuesday May 31st, 2016:

Jesus answered them, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance." — Luke 5:31-32

Thoughts on Today's Verse....

Jesus was often criticized for deliberately associating with people who were suspect in the eyes of the "religious." There was a reason for his behavior. He wasn't doing this to be popular, weird, bizarre, or hip. Jesus came to redeem the enslaved, find the lost, mend the broken, and reclaim the sinner. Can Jesus' bodily presence strive for anything less than this today, and still call herself Jesus' Church?

My Prayer...

Forgive me, Father, when I opt for security in my acquaintances and I avoid potentially messy entanglements in my relationships. Please open my eyes to see the needy all around me. Please use me to lead them to your grace and to help them find family with your people. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Early Morning Observations for 6/1/16

Yesterday afternoon giant thunderheads casually glided across the sky. They looked like huge cotton balls, one even resembled a huge white teddy bear. Remember those simple times when you would look up and picture objects in the cloud formations? Yes, simple times, carefree times growing up. Do we provide those escapes for today's children? Do we provide those escapes for ourselves? If you want to stay young at heart, find those moments and escape into them.

Early each morning, Cindy and I take Bear for a walk. I stood there watching the cars breeze by, up on the highway. It does appear that today's Speed Limit signs are 'suggestions.' Charlie used to ask, "Why the rush?" I told him, "They are ten minutes late for work so they want to get there on time." Part of our fast paced life today. Ridiculous? Yes, but so many other things have become skewed to that point of ridiculous as well. Ridiculous appears to be the new norm.

Today, may each of you find a quiet time, a time to escape into some restorative revere of past pleasures. A time and place when happiness surrounded you. A remembrance of family gatherings, a light hearted time filled with warmth and laughter. May you also take time to talk to the Lord. Walk with Him and nourish your soul with the peace and comfort of His presence. This is a new day, make the most of it, enjoy it, and bring joy to others whenever possible. In Jesus name we ask. Amen
