[quote=Floyd Brown]You can't just skip over history & pick out the parts you want.

The people that are poor today is due in no small way because through out history people have been raped & plundered to gain wealth. Today people are getting raped & plundered still.

You are going to tell me & the world that how many gained their wealth was good & you are all for might makes right?

Are you going to say that to enslave people is okay as long as it
wasn't or isn't you or yours?

Today they use governments to make their conquest gains legal.

I don't wish to be a slave nor would it in any way please me to see you as one.[/quote

After all isn't it all about having what it takes to be comfortable that gives us security?

Just having it all for our selves dose not in the end really give us the security we need or want.

By we are you implying that you are an African American? If so did you also know that African Americans in Africa were selling their own people into slavery? I am in no way being racist. Just wanted you to know that in case you didn't. Slavery was a plight on this nation. There are still people today being sold into slavery. While white people here are guilty of this cruelty, African Americans in Africa have to share the blame. I also read that there were some African Americans here that owned slaves. Just saying!

There are, according to recent reports more than 29 MILLION people who are slaves. It is estimated that there are 60,000 in the US. See: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/worldviews/wp/2013/10/17/this-map-shows-where-the-worlds-30-million-slaves-live-there-are-60000-in-the-u-s/
Take note of the map, you can see where it is still a huge problem. Take note of Africa, 1 out of every 140 people are slaves.

Slave ownership did happen in America, and yes there were a substantial amount of blacks who owned their own stable of slaves. This of course will soon be written out of modern history books and you will not find many references on the net. But, if you visit the National Archives you will find volume after volume of references of who owned them, their names and dates of ownership. One can not erase history, but have we not been run through the coals over this for years and years? When is it time to move on?

People claim that Americans are guilty of slave ownership. Yes, there are some you can do the math and you will see that the ratio is very small. I do not know anyone who is a slave owner and to be honest I have never known an American Citizen who has owned a slave. (distinction is made, because I knew some diplomats in DC who had slaves). It is a mistake to use the blanket statement "white people here are guilty of this cruelty" is just unfair. Of note, the more advanced a country becomes the less likely they are to tolerate slave ownership.

Thanks for correcting me, I didn't mean all white people. I can see where you would think I did. I didn't mean it as a blanket statement because the republican northern whites wanted to abolish slavery.
Thanks for all the good information about where to read about actual history. You seem to be very knowledgeable about history. Are you a teacher or are you just a history buff?

I was not correcting you, I was just adding my 2 cents. Your post was great!

No, I am a computer engineer who loves to read and do research. I visited those achieves to find out if my family had ever owned a slave. I found nothing that would indicate they had. I started to think about it. Who did own slaves, where were they located, what happened to those families (slave owners). Everyone knows what happened to the decedents of the slaves....just turn on the television or go to the theatre. But, not much is said about the owners. It was interesting and very enlightening.

Your posts are well presented and I enjoy reading them. So, keep it up!

I found that a significant number do as you suggest. But, my interest was in what happened to the owners, what happened to their farms and businesses after the war, if they had to give up their farms where did they go..... many questions that is not PC to ask. Everyone focus their attention on blacks, and that is all fine and well. I guess I have always liked the roads less traveled.

RNCWO in the past it was normal for s/s to go up 3.0 to 3.2 so if obozo's economy is doing so well why is only going up 1.5?

COLAs for Social Security, military and govt civilian pensions go up, by law, based upon year-to-year increases due to inflation in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W). The third quarter of each year is compared to the third quarter of the previous year, and the COLAs reflect the rate of increase. In the wake of our financial meltdown in 2008, there was an actual decrease in the CPI-W in 2009 (reflecting the deflation our economy experienced), and while there was an increase from 2009 to 2010, 2010 was still less than 2008, so there were no COLA's for 2 years in a row.

COLAs since 2000 (as calculated in DEC of each year, effective in JAN of the following year):

2000 - 3.5
2001 - 2.6
2002 - 1.4
2003 - 2.1
2004 - 2.7
2005 - 4.1
2006 - 3.3
2007 - 2.3
2008 - 5.8
2009 - 0
2010 - 0
2011 - 3.6
2012 - 1.7
2013 - 1.5

The 3.6 for 2011 was actually the increase between the 3rd Qtr of 2011 and the 3rd Qtr of 2008 since 2009 and 2010 were less than 2008.

Make of it what you will. No axe to grind here.

The recession started way before Obama even entered office, and it officially ended 5 months after he was sworn in.

From DOL: "The most recent recession began in December 2007 and ended in June 2009..."

Dear Dummy Boy - Speaking for the old people etc. that you want to point a finger at and criticize, let me ask you this; when you were in school was your major language English or German or Japanese or Russian? If you went to college did you or the government pick which school you went to? When you went out and got a job was it a job you selected or was it one you were directed to take. Did you choose where you wanted to live, were you free to excel at your chosen occupation and advance your fortunes as you saw fit or were you limited by the state?
If your answers were English; my choice; my selection; my choice; and my choice then thank those "old people" for preserving your freedoms and your way of life. If it wasn't for them you'd be looking over your shoulder right now waiting for the knock on the door for expressing what some might consider to be criticism of the state. But you have that right, at least for the moment because of those "Old People". Now is the time for all people to make sure we continue to have those rights. It is the time to guarantee those rights for the coming generations. What about it Dummy Boy you up for the challenge?
