DEARBORN, Mich. -- Social media was ablaze Tuesday night with the news that Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), the first major Jewish presidential candidate, won a solid majority of Democratic primary voters here in Dearborn, Michigan, a city outside Detroit known for its large Arab-American population.
MSNBCs anchors, led by Lawrence ODonnell, remarked on it during the networks coverage of the Michigan results on Tuesday night. Several other journalists joined in, with WNYCs Brian Lehrer calling it the "stat of the night."
But Arab-American and Muslim residents of Dearborn weren't shocked. And they weren't amused by the assumption that because of their background, they wouldn't support someone who is Jewish.
Malak Nasser, 20, said peoples surprise that Dearborn voters chose a Jewish candidate was rooted in damaging stereotypes.
"They're constantly associating us with violence and being hateful and anti-Semitic, she said. "If they actually come into our city, and they see what were like and interact with us, theyll know its actually the opposite -- and they wouldnt be surprised at all."

Moldy, I have worked for Muslims and had a next-door neighbor that was Palestinian, and we got along just fine. I have also have had a Muslim lady in a berka, refuse to enroll her daughter in our school unless she was assured that her child would not have a Jewish teacher.

Fear and intolerance is not one sided. We should all try to work to get past that, and deal with the nuts on all sides.

rebob, I have to agree with moldy, Conservatives are concerned with African- Americans cheating or even getting welfare. Poor people in our society pick up a few crumbs that fall to the floor from the American table. The wealthy get the steaks with expensive wines before it ever reaches the table.

Your point has merit, but...............to my mind, the only real advantage whites have, structurally, is the institution and tradition of inheritance. I wouldn't be too averse to a tax remedy for that.
