Republican lawmakers have accused the Obama administration of putting Irans interests ahead of the U.S. in a scathing letter to Secretary of State John Kerry. The letter, signed by 13 senators including Mark Kirk, Tom Cotton, and Kelly Ayotte, was inspired by the administrations efforts to block congressional legislation that would have tightened the governments visa waiver program.
Iran-sponsored terrorists and militants are responsible for the death of more than 700 Americans, the senators wrote. As you continue to engage with [Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif], we urgerather than seeking to placate the complaints of Iran, the worlds biggest state sponsor of terrorismyou to press him and his government to cease its support for terrorism and provide tangible evidence that it is doing so.
At the end of 2015, urged on by the serious security concerns exposed by San Bernardino terrorist Tashfeen Malik, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee set about developing new visa restrictions. Under the new law, foreigners would be prohibited from entering the United States if they had traveled to Iraq, Iran, or any other country designated a sponsor of terrorism since 2011.
Rather than support the effort, Kerry sent a letter to Tehran leaders in December, assuring them that President Obama would veto the new restrictions. Iran had publicly criticized the legislation, saying that it would be a violation of the nuclear deal.
The senators noted in their correspondence that the reforms were not drafted with Iranian interests in mind, but U.S. national security interests.
The latest division comes at a time when Republicans and Democrats battle publicly over the dramatic capture of 10 U.S. Navy sailors in Iran. Obama is claiming that the quickly-defused situation is proof of why diplomacy works better than hostility. Republicans were aghast at the pictures of sailors on their knees before the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, claiming that if this episode was proof of anything, it showed that Americas enemies were no longer afraid of the U.S.
The administration is pretending as if nothing out of the ordinary has occurred, said Sen. John McCain in a statement. Vice President Joe Biden described the incident as standard nautical practice. That assertion is patently false.
Both of these incidents prove that the Obama administration is willing to go to the ends of the Earth to keep Iran happy and satisfied. An outsider would look at this and come to the conclusion that in a direct war between Iran and the United States, Iran would easily achieve victory. Thats obviously not the case, of course, but when you have a president whose top priority is his legacy and not the safety of the American people, things get a little wonky.
