by Eric Lyons, M.Min.

Even the most casual of Bible students are aware of the fact that the first son of Adam and Eve mentioned in the Bible is Cain. After noting that God banished the first couple from the garden of Eden following their sin, Genesis 4:1 indicates, “Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, and said, ‘I have acquired a man from the Lord.’” The births of Abel and Seth are also mentioned in Genesis 4 (though the amount of time that lapses is unknown). One thing that Genesis 4 clearly teaches: Seth was born sometime after Cain and Abel. After Seth’s birth, Adam stated: “God has appointed another seed for me instead of Abel, whom Cain killed” (4:25). Clearly, Cain had already murdered Abel by the time Seth was born.

In Genesis 5, however, in “the book of the genealogy of Adam” (from Adam to the patriarch Noah), Seth, not Cain, is listed as Adam’s son. According to University of Houston Bible Professor Steven Dimattei, Genesis 5:3-4 “clearly implies that Seth was the first born” (2013). Allegedly, in Genesis 5, “the genealogical list is enumerated from father to son; there is no mention of the female, and each son is depicted as the first son, who then further fathers a son…. [I]n this author’s genealogy there is no mention of Cain and Abel,” rather “Seth, like Enosh Kenan, Mahalalel, etc., is presented as the first son” (Dimattei, 2013).

As with so many “Bible discrepancies,” Dr. Dimattei’s assertion that there is “tension” between the fourth and fifth chapters of Genesis is based solely on the assumption that the sons listed in Genesis 5 were all firstborn sons. The fact is, however, the text never explicitly states, nor does it imply, that the sons listed were the “firstborn” of their fathers. One would think the first obvious clue that Genesis 5 is not implying the births of firstborn sons would be that only four verses before noting “Adam lived one hundred and thirty years, and begot a son…and named him Seth” (5:3), the text mentions two of Seth’solder brothers (Genesis 4:25). What’s more, when Genesis 5 indicates that “Seth lived one hundred and five years, and begot Enosh” (vs. 6), or that “Enosh lived ninety years, and begot Cainan” (vs. 9), etc., there is nothing in the text that proves these were firstborn sons. They may have been, but they may not have been. Interestingly, not only is the first son mentioned in Genesis 5 clearly not a firstborn son (5:3), the chapter concludes by mentioning that “Noah was five hundred years old, and Noah begot Shem, Ham, and Japheth” (5:32), yet Shem apparently was not Noah’s firstborn, though he is listed first (cf. Genesis 7:6; 8:13; 11:10). Nor is the text implying that Noah’s sons were triplets, anymore than Genesis 11:26 implies that Abraham was a triplet (cf. Genesis 11:32; 12:4; Acts 7:4; see Lyons 2004).

The fact of the matter is, the emphasis in Genesis 5 is on those who would “call on the name of the Lord” (4:26), including Enoch, who “walked with God” (5:22,24), and Noah, who was a “preacher of righteousness” (2 Peter 2:5) during a time when “the wickedness of man was great in the earth” (Genesis 6:5). Concurrently, Genesis 5 also emphasizes the Messianic lineage from Adam through Shem. [NOTE: Interestingly, many prominent sons in the genealogy of Jesus were not firstborn sons (e.g., Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Judah, etc.).]

While some may see “tension” between Genesis 4 and 5, and while others may see a “clear contradiction” between the two chapters, when we carefully consider the biblical text, its truthfulness is clearly seen: (1) Cain and Abel were older brothers of Seth, and (2) the sons listed in Genesis 5 were not necessarily firstborn sons. Bible students must be careful making assumptions about the text.

Israel became a nation on May 15, 1948. This was a divine date set by God well over 2,500 years ago and is recorded in the Bible.

Before the Israelites entered the Promised Land, Moses declared to Israel the blessings of obedience and the curses for disobedience (Deuteronomy 28). The Israelites entered their land around 1400 B.C. under the leadership of Joshua (Joshua 1-24).

The prophet Ezekiel records the period determined by God as punishment for Israel’s disobedience.

Ezekiel 4:5-6
“For I have laid upon thee the years of their iniquity, according to the number of the days, three hundred and ninety days: so shalt thou bear the iniquity of the house of Israel. And when thou hast accomplished them, lie again on thy right side, and thou shalt bear the iniquity of the house of Judah forty days: I have appointed thee each day for a year.”

· Punishment = 390 years + 40 years = 430 years

Because of their disobedience to God's commands, the Israelites (Jews) were taken captive in 605 B.C. by the Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar (2 Chronicles 36:5-21).

Later, King Cyrus of Persia conquered Babylon. In 536 B.C. Cyrus allowed the Jews to leave Babylon and return to their homeland.

· Punishment completed = 70 years (605 B.C – 536 B.C.)

· Punishment remaining = 430 year – 70 years = 360 years

Even though King Cyrus gave all Jews permission to return home, only a small number actually accepted the offer. The Jews had become comfortable in pagan Babylon and chose to stay in exile. Because of their disobedience to God, the 360 years of punishment remaining were multiplied by 7. The reason for this is explain in the book of Leviticus (Leviticus 26:18, 26:21, 26:24 and 26:28). In Leviticus, it says that if the people did not repent while being punished, the punishment would be multiplied by 7. Clearly, by staying in pagan Babylon, most exiles were refusing to repent.

· New Punishment = 360 years x 7 = 2,520 years

The 2,520 years are actually Jewish lunar years. The lunar years must be converted as follows:

· 2,520 years x 360-day lunar calendar = 907,200 days

· 907,200 days divided by 365 days = 2,485.479 years

Exactly 2,485.479 years from 536 B.C. is the prophetic date of May 15, 1948. On this date, Israel became a nation just as promised in the Bible (Isaiah 66:8).

There is also more proof found in Scripture that Israel becoming a Nation in 1948 was a Divine fulfillment of Bible Prophecy.  In Deuteronomy 30:5, God made it perfectly clear that the Jews would indeed possess the land of Israel at the appointed time He declared.

Deuteronomy 30:5 - "And the Lord your God will bring you into the land which your fathers possessed, and you shall possess it, and He will do you good and multiply you above your fathers."

Deuteronomy 30:5 is verse # 5708 of the Torah, or the Old Testament.  The number 5708 is significant and proves that God is very exact with His plans for His people.  The year 1948 on the Gregorian calendar is the same year as 5708 on the Hebrew calendar.  How awesome that the verse number's prophecy is fullfilled in the same number of year as the verse itself!

Additional Notes:
~Counting a small part of the "Jewish Calendar Year" as a year, is the way the Jews would have reckoned the captivity from 605 B.C. to 536 B.C. as 70 years.
~There is only 1 year between 1 B.C. and A.D. 1, not 2 as a calculator will count.

Thank you for demonstrating that the Bible is indeed lacking in explanatory methodology and therefore also full of contradictions.
Your attempt to refute Dr. Steven Dimattei only confirms my point.

What about the straightforward contradictions in The" Flood Story"

Noah is commanded to gather 7 pairs of clean animals OR only 2 of each animal? (Gen 7:2 vs Gen 6:19-20,7:8,7:16)

Your statement is false, simply because some choose to read into the scriptures what is not there.

Chapter 6 concludes with these words: ‘“And of every living thing of all flesh, you shall bring two of every kind into the ark, to keep them alive with you; they shall be male and female. Of the birds after their kind, and of the animals after their kind, of every creeping thing of the ground after its kind, two of every kind will come to you to keep them alive. As for you, take for yourself some of all food which is edible, and gather it to yourself; and it shall be for food for you and for them.’ Thus Noah did; according to all that God had commanded him, so he did” (6:19-22).

Apparently, all of the animals would “come to” Noah voluntarily (6:20). It would seem that he would not have to hunt them down or look for them in remote places. Their natural instinct for self-preservation, energized by a special act of God, would bring them unerringly to Noah’s ark.31

The key to understanding biblical narratives is what is repeated in the context. In 6:22, Moses records this very important statement: “Thus Noah did; according to all that God had commanded him, so he did.” In chapter 7, he then repeats this phrase three more times (7:5, 9, 16). This informs us that God must be obeyed in all His instructions if His people expect to enjoy the fruit of life and blessing (e.g., Deut 26:16-19; 28:1-14).32

Before we move into chapter 7, we must quickly put ourselves in Noah’s sandals. Though he was thrust onto the front pages of his day’s newspaper as a “preacher of righteousness” (2 Pet 2:5), he did not flinch when the criticism came. No doubt he was called a fool and worse.33 Just imagine how many Noah jokes people came up with over a century! But he went on believing and working. Noah remained obedient, doing exactly what God said for 25, 50, 75, 100 years…until the ark lay like a huge coffin on the land.34 What a powerful reminder that God sometimes calls His servants to obey Him even when it seems nonsensical. In these situations, all that we can do is trust in the promises of God’s Word.

This section also reminds us that it is possible to be right with God, even amidst surrounding iniquity. God is the same today as He was to Noah, and if only we are willing to fulfill the conditions we too shall walk with God and please Him.

3. Trust in God’s Provision (7:1-16). Moses writes, “Then the LORD said to Noah, ‘Enter the ark, you and all your household, for you alone I have seen to be righteous before Me in this time. You shall take with you of every clean animal by sevens, a male and his female; and of the animals that are not clean two, a male and his female; also of the birds of the sky, by sevens, male and female, to keep offspring alive on the face of all the earth. For after seven more days, I will send rain on the earth forty days and forty nights; and I will blot out from the face of the land every living thing that I have made.’ Noah did according to all that the LORD had commanded him.” How many animals went into the ark? The truth is that there is no inherent incompatibility between the two texts as they presently stand.Genesis 7:2-3 is just more precise than 6:19-20 on the question of the types and numbers of animals and birds that would board the ark. Noah’s first instruction was to admit pairs of all kinds of creatures on the ark to preserve their lives (6:19-20). That was the basic formula. Then he was given more specific instructions about admitting seven pairs of each of the clean animals and seven pairs of each kind of bird. The purpose of this measure was to become clear only after the flood. Birds would be needed to scout out the earth (8:7-12), and the clean animals35 and birds would be offered in sacrifice to the Lord (8:20). If Noah had taken only one pair of each and then offered each of these pairs in sacrifice, these species would have become completely extinct.

So first it's 2 then it's 7 makes perfect sense ,and Noah was 950 years old ! And then there's the fact that there is no geologic evidence of the flood!

I made perfect sense of no contradictions.

Let's catch up in modern science, in 2014 scientists discover that there is more water in the earth, than on the earth. Not only massive ocean near the Earth's core, but also a new mineral containing oceans of water. Thus when the bible states the springs gushed forth their water. The springs alone can flood the earth, even if it had not rained. Reported by a liberal magazine. .

So once again you refute your own position!
The Smithsonian link clearly states a direct link between the flood in the "Epic Of Gilgamesh " ,which was centuries before the biblical account.

The "water " that refer to is not in a liquid state and would require tremendous pressure and processing to render to a liquid.

Even your link to the ABC news account clearly mentioned the mythical aspects of the flood.

When is enough, enough?
This has been fun watching you refute your own position. Thanks for the entertainment! LOL

Oh and just one more thing . Why aren't there any black people or Asians on the Ark?

And Why would an omnipotent deity go through so much trouble?
Why not just wipe it all out and start over?

Go with humankind 2.0.
