The lesson is,,, people are people,,, always have been and likely wont change.... your average Joe,,, even in Afghanistan,,,, just wanted to get along and live,,,,, but that just isnt as easy as most americans believe it to be. Especially those who never served..
Yep, but it's a two way street. America isn't as innocent, all powerful and totally altruistic as some folks would have us believe, however, none of this misinformation can be laid at the feet of the folks in uniform. They serve, by and large, honorably, it's the idiots above them, the civilians, who are responsible for the doo doo.
There have been mistakes made, to be sure, but for the most part - it's due to some civilian, knowing more about military matters than military people  - who made those mistakes and forced the military to comply. I suppose we could go through 235 years of history, item by item, and point out who, what, when and where - but I won't live long enough to complete that task.
In any case, for every uniformed person who makes an egregious error, I'll show you 100,000 that did not. So, the preponderance of the evidence shows the military to act appropriately. The disconnect that exists between what we SAY and what we DO, isn't caused by the military, it's the moronic politicians who ride that horse. Using the armed forces for political purposes, is an age old tradition - and the entire responsibility for the consequences, lies with those who come up with the "political purposes".
