Major greenhouse gases hit record highs in 2014: report
AFP By Kerry Sheridan

Amid worldwide heat records, eastern North America was the only major region of the world to experience below-average annual temperatures
.
Miami (AFP) - In 2014 the world's oceans swelled, major greenhouse gases that fuel global warming hit record highs and the planet's surface temperature reached its hottest point in 135 years, international researchers said Thursday.

The findings are contained in the 2014 State of the Climate report, a peer-reviewed study that examines temperature, precipitation and weather events around the world.

A total of 413 scientists from 58 countries around the world contributed to the report, the 25th in a series that is based on data collected by environmental monitoring stations and instruments on land, water, ice and in space.

The warmth reached deep into the oceans and high into the atmosphere, and scientists warned that the climate continues to change quickly compared to the pre-industrial era, with no end in sight.

"If we were to freeze greenhouse gases at their current levels, the seas would actually continue to warm for centuries to millennia," said oceanographer Greg Johnson of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory.

"And that means as they warm they expand, and sea level would continue to rise," he told reporters on a conference call to discuss the report.

"Carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide -- the major greenhouse gases released into Earth's atmosphere -- once again all reached record high average atmospheric concentrations for the year," it said.

Amid worldwide heat records, eastern North America was the only major region of the world to experience below-average annual temperatures.

"Europe observed its warmest year on record by a large margin, with close to two dozen countries breaking their previous national temperature records," it said.

"Many countries in Asia had annual temperatures among their 10 warmest on record; Africa reported above-average temperatures across most of the continent throughout 2014; Australia saw its third warmest year on record, following record heat there in 2013."

In Latin America, Mexico had its warmest year on record, while Argentina and Uruguay each had their second warmest year on record.

"It is a fairly consistent picture," said Thomas Karl, director of NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information.

- Oceans rise -

The world's oceans experienced record warmth last year, and sea level was at its highest in modern times, too.

"Owing to both ocean warming and land ice melt contributions, global mean sea level in 2014 was also record high and 67 millimeters (2.6 inches) greater than the 1993 annual mean," when satellite measurements of ocean levels began, said the report.

Johnson said the oceans are a good measure of global warming because they absorb much of the heat and carbon dioxide given off by the burning of fossil fuels.

Unfortunately, even if humankind took strong action to curb fossil fuel use, the trend would not reverse anytime soon, he said.

"I think of it more like a fly wheel or a freight train. It takes a big push to get it going," said Johnson.

"But it is moving now and it will continue to move long after we stop pushing it."

The full report is published in the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society.

You should know you're not going to change anyone's mind. It's a simple fact of human nature, if you're afraid that something might be true and don't want it to be, you'll find someone to tell you "it's a lie!" - and you'll believe it, because you desperately want to.

Some other people, afraid that something might be true, revel in the fear and will believe every "the sky is falling!" scam they find - because they relish the fear.

A few others, afraid that something might be true, earnestly research legitimate scientific data, take classes to learn how to interpret that data - and decide for themselves what is real or imaginary.

Guess which of the three is very much in the minority?

"If you do not learn from history, then you are doomed to repeat it." If you really study the history of climate cycles on the Earth you will find that we have had cycles of warming and cooling since creation. Roman historians recorded more than a millennium ago that when they invaded the British Isles they found lush vineyards. Today the British Isles are generally too cool for good grape cultivation. In the late 1800's and early 1900's "scientists" reported that we were entering another Ice Age which never materialized. Again in the 1960's and early 1970's "scientists" said we were entering another Ice Age. Then just a few years later in the 1970's they started hollering about Global Warming. When that proved to be wrong they changed it to Climate Change. And repeatedly when statistical data didn't support their computer models, they merely changed the data.
This whole debate isn't about Climate Change or the weather. It is about CONTROL to further the agenda of either the "green weenies" or the elitists who think they should decide how the peons should live.

Most of what you have written below is irrelevant, but you haven't really thought this through. I have stated many times before that information to you deniers is like water that falls off a duck's back. Read the article and try to refute it. But, of course, you won't read it, and if you did you couldn't refute it. This article is posted here mostly for the lurkers who rarely post but are interested in this subject.

How did the threats posed by climate change - turn into someone telling folks how they should live? You gave your fear away with that statement. By all means, if it alleviates your fear that someone is going to tell you that you can't run your air conditioner anymore, or some other dire consequence, believe that it's all just a naturally occurring phenomena - but remember - the last time the Earth actually did that - only microbes survived.

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

It has recently come to light, thanks to one of Exxon's own climate experts, Lenny Bernstein, that this company knew about the connection between fossil fuels and climate change over 30 years ago. That's seven years before the dangers of climate change became a public issue. This shocking revelation came from an email sent by L. Bernstein to Alyssa Bernstein from Ohio University (no relation to Lenny Bernstein), and was reported in the Guardian.

Anthropogenic global warming is a scam, it always was.

We should not expect the deniers to believe any evidence that global warming is real and is largely anthropogenic. At a website called edX.org there is a fascinating free course (among 500 others) on the psychology of climate change deniers. Great course. And don't expect evidence to change any denier's mind.

The interesting thing about consensus is that if one person out of a thousand holds a different thesis than the other 999 and eventually the one person is found to be right, then consensus is reduced to opinion. I know this old fashioned but I continue to believe that God has more power and control over this world and the universe than mere man. Only a fool fails to recognize how fossils fuels have improved life.

Instead of studying people who won't listen to propaganda, you should study this planet. The book "Dark Winter" will clue you into what is happening with climate, and more.

You have set it up as a false choice, either one or the other. I guess that's how your mind works. You seem to feel that you can only study one thing at a time, unlike colleges and universities and high schools and middle schools, where students study a number of different things at the same time. Are you able to walk and chew gum at the same time? I guess not.

I don't think I could find anyone who would deny that fossil fuels have improved mankind's life. But they have done immense damage that we can now avoid. Only a fool would deny that, and deny that there are better alternatives.

I deny there are better alternatives. Yes there are alternatives, but they are not better. Unintended consequences occur e.g. when autos are converted to hydrogen, there's more than just water coming out of the exhaust (lots of nasty heavy metals for one).

A big problem with alternatives is the oil companies block anything that might interfere with thier profits. Mostly by using politicians to keep any funding minimal.
