The myth of Liberal social justice...who ended slavery and who started a war to keep it

Who put an end to slavery and who fought a war to keep human beings as livestock?

When trying to track the political story of antebellum America, one thing becomes quickly clear, the Republican party was a magnet for several smaller parties that shared basic values and joined together over the years, particularly from 1820 to 1860. Those basic values included building up the frontier, the limiting and/or elimination of slavery and the promotion of business interests. The only defection from the embryonic Republican Party occurred in 1848 when a group of Whigs, together with the Liberty Party and some anti-slavery Democrats, formed the Free Soil Party. The Free Soil Party rejoined the Whigs in 1856 to form the Republican Party.

The Democrats are easier to follow. They started as supporters of Andrew Jackson and remained a single strong entity until 1856 when they split over the issue of slavery in the new territories. The northern Democrats wanted slavery limited to those states where it was already in law and southern Democrats wanted it expanded into the newly opening western territories. It should be noted that in 1844 a small faction broke away from the Democrats over the issue of slavery and joined the Free Soil Party.

By 1856, the only party operating in the South was the Democrats. So, when the Civil war began, the entire seceding South was a Democrat establishment.

So, who wanted to put an end to slavery, not the Democrats, they were so committed to the institution that they broke the nation into warring factions.

The history of Republican and embryonic Republican Party actions was consistently a promotion of the abolition of slavery.

This information was pulled together from several sources. I’ve provided dates and affiliations so anyone wishing to fact check can easily do so. Google the year and the party and the information will be readily available.

Why the American history lesson?

What about the version where LBJ frees the slaves single handedly with the Civil Rights Act of 1968 against a ferocious Republican filibuster and with the full Democractic Party support.

Or how the Republican president FDR put all those Americans in "concentration" camps and seized their property during WW II because they were immigrants and descendants from Japan while arming Italian and German descendants and sending them to fighr in Europe.

Damn those evil, lying, revisionist Republicans.

If you are serious in those remarks, you are in desperate need of American history lessons.

The Civil Rights Act of 1968 didn't free anyone, it only ended discrimination in housing, and FDR was a Democrat, not a Republican.

That was then, This is now ; Chris Ladd, columnist for the Huston chronicle goes by the handle GOPLifer, writes in his column , Half of the Republican Congressional delegation now(today) comes from the former Confederacy. There are no more white Democrats from the South, all of the Dixiecrats are now(today) GOP Republicans ! Quit denying who you are today and who you were back then, its only obvious !!

You are half right. A lot of Southern Democrats did join the Republicans but none were Dixiecrats. The Dixiecrats remained loyal to their KKK roots and remained in the Democrat party. Do some research.

Do your own research. Check history and fact based sources, not opinion writers. The only Democrats who switched to the Republican Party were ones who repudiated segregation.

It was Democrats who did everything they could to keep blacks from participating politically. When nothing they tried worked anymore, the Democrats made them financially dependent on welfare, encouraged the destruction of their families, and did everything they could to kill incentive among blacks.

Apparently there is some you still don't understand. Not all Republicans are Conservatives. Not all Conservatives are Republicans. I for one. Mainstream Republicans are no better than Democrats today but historically they have been the guardians of individual liberty.

If you think minorities are incapable of doing things for themselves, check the definition of bigot.
