In part, the story states: "What Obamacare has wrought is the kind of market-driven reformation that Republicans pretend to believe in. Which makes you wonder how much of their opposition rests on the merits, and how much is just a loathing for anything associated with Barack Obama."
The racist component to the rejection of ObamaCare has been evident for several years, despite holier-than-thou protestations of conservatives and Republicans to the contrary.

Richard,
You need to look at Obamacare a little more closely. (and BTW, I may be a racist too because I don't read the New York Times either-what a brilliant reason for calling someone a racist !)
Besides being an instrument to control the lives of just about everyone (except those the King exempted) it is a job killer, and income reducer due to shorter work weeks for people who work for those companies that can't afford the premiums or penalties and still stay in business. This, and the other taxes levied by this law will actually have the effect of reducing the federal revenue at a time when spending is rapidly increasing due to this law. This will have a disasterous effect on the jobs market and the federal deficit will balloon to an even greater impossible number for our kids.
After 5 years of this administration the number of unemployed, able bodied people still wanting to work and support their families are at a 35 year high. This law is a giant step in the wrong direction.
Another major purpose of this law is "income re-distribution" by letting the higher paid individuals pay for the lower paid individuals health insurance premiums, (differing subsidies for paying for the health insurance based on income as determined by the IRS).
Now put your thinking cap on and try to figure out what will s happen to the U. S. when all the government "subsidies" (Earned income tax credits, free cell phones, food stamps, questionable disability awarding, welfare, housing allowances, energy allowances, free health care premiums, and some not listed here) finally result in those not working living just as well as those who risked their home mortgage to start a business (and hire people), work 16 hours a day to keep it, and, those persons who saw some advantage to graduating from high school and going to college so they could earn more (and afford to pay for health insurance and other extras without government "transfers"). The money the government gives away has to first be taken away from someone else.
When the U.S. government gifting (for votes) reaches a certain point this country will no longer be a prosperous, free country and even the persons receiving the gifts will suffer. You become a "captive" when the government succeeds in degrading the economy to the condition that you must accept their "gifts" for survival. Looking at the national scene, the disregard for the constitution, the employment picture, and the ever increasing largesse of the government, I believe we are very close to the point of no return in becoming a "controlled" population (a necessary function for a socialistic society).
You need to objectively look at conditions around you and make up your mind and act accordingly now. It is Late in our country's travel to something you won't like.
