Watched the tribute to Arnold Palmer at the Masters with tears in my eyes

Every year from the age ten until I was 38 and my father died, we watched the Masters together. I was part of Arnie's Army. There was just something about the man, his spirit, that drew him to me. From all accounts of those who knew him, all accounts, he was what he appeared to be to me: a down to the bone good and decent man. I never knew my grandfather and that is what he became to me. He was perfect for the role. There were untold times in my life when I had to ask myself, "What would 'grandpa' suggest you to do or say?"; I never saw him as telling or commanding me. Always gentle, always kind, always respectful no matter how awful my thinking or plans. It was his surrogate conscience that saved me from many mistakes. (And of course there were those times I didn't listen and faced the consequences.) What I realized at his tribute, with a start, was that he was a Conservative! Traditional values and principles were central to his character. But so was, and as much I feel, being gentle, kind and respectful.

Just as flaming Liberals would be disinclined to insult him, given his sterling presence, by his nature he would be disinclined to insult Liberals, given his character. Such a man commenting here, I believe, would have had an incredible impact on our discourse. An irresistible example to model except for the crazy fringes, which by their adverse or hostile reaction to Arnie we would have a fair measure. I do not practice the ideal I see in Arnie. He was a tried and true gentleman. Whether or not my assessment of him is true, it is for me something worth using as a yardstick for my posts. Just to speak my t***h gently, kindly, and respectfully no matter how angry, frustrated, and self-righteous I may feel. And to be, as I imagine he would be, gracious when confronted with anger, frustration and self-righteousness. That has not been my way, but I would like to make it so.

BOooooooorrriiinnggg ---- Have you had tears in your eyes over female g*****l m********n ??? ISIS burning people alive -- or -- drowning people in cages??? How about the Saran gas attack ??? ---------- Which in all likelihood Assad never had anything to do with. Why would he? ISIS is finally being routed out of Syria; he is winning. What would he have to gain by doing that and turning the world against him ????? He doesn't need the "Assad has to go" narrative to be strengthened. False f**g attack, anyone ????????????????

That was an unfair attack. I never read what he posts but I did read this one. I think he may try to be more like Artie. Never thought much about golf but I did admire Arnold Palmer.

To answer all those questions, yes. As to Assad, who knows?

Sorry, I'm a little negatively biased about sports since I lack the sports gene.

Exactly, but if I had to guess, I would guess it was the doing of the jihadist rebels (ISIS) The real question was more in regard to your depth of feelings regarding the barbaric atrocities and monumental suffering caused by evil that is so prolific in the world today and these end days that we know will only continue to get worse from here. ---------------- I may be a bit obsessed with all this stuff but if all the world was like me it would not be happening.

I have no belief in the End Times. It has nothing to do with being Christian. If you want End Times, it is now: act like it. What does "act like it" mean? Care for the least of these--that's it! No other concerns. Your welcoming heart gets a knife through that practice, rejoice. Barbaric atrocities are common place in history. No government can stop it. The best efforts of worldly authorities just sweep it somewhere else. Yet we must still confront it wherever it raises its ugly head. Trump's response to the Syrian chemical warfare attack was asinine and dangerously wrong. And probably illegal. I predicted he would get us into war and most likely nuclear war within 90 days. He has no heart nor brain for diplomacy. Winning is all he sees. He desperately needs a loser to feel okay. This not really president Trump will k**l America.

The only reason you don't believe in the biblical end times is because you don't know enough about fulfilled and fulfilling Bible prophecy. Do you think it's just by accident that out of the thousands of cities in the world, the most dangerous end times world events all center around Jerusalem, about which God said do not divide this My land, Do Not divide it and any nation that does will suffer great destruction? Trying to divide it and make half of it a Palestinian state is a prime objective of the United Nations. Obama set us up for the governing United Nations military forces to invade Jerusalem by abstaining from that v**e which made it international law that the Jews must stop building settlements which they will not abide by. The UN well make more resolutions and try for a couple years to make them stop but eventually will have to go in and try to force them to stop. The Bible predicted the Jews who should have long since entered the dustbin of history and that have been scattered throughout all parts of the world to eventually return to the land of Israel and for Israel to be made a nation in one day. There is so much more fulfilled prophecy and now the only thing left to happen that will kick off the tribulations is for that seven year peace agreement between Israel and the Muslims to finally happened ----- I would venture to guess that will happen the next time Israel is attacked, which in all likelihood will bring greater carnage to both sides than ever before. I think the agreement will include the division of Jerusalem for the Palestinians and for the Jews permission to go ahead and build the third Temple. So we know what comes next and we can see it all being fulfilled. Do you think is just by accident that the Bible new 2000 years ago there would be a 7 year peace agreement that would be instrumental in starting the tribulations and leading to the bringing about of Armageddon???

I fear that but you upset about Donald Trump is only two true. There is much agreement that a third world war is on its way and our government seems to be trying to goad Russia into attacking us. The Bible says that 2/3 of humanity will be dead before Armageddon. It will only continue to get worse from here.

Yes Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player both had tears in their eyes as well and so did I. It was a memorable Masters for sure but then I am kind of a sport nut. Both football as well as golf and sometimes baseball when the mood strikes.

My sports time ended a week ago since I never stop watching college basketball. I loved baseball as long as I could play it but have come to the realization that it is more fun to lie on the green grass on a golf course and watch the grass grow instead of watching a couple of guys play catch with a batter and umpire in the picture with them. I can't stand college baseball because the sound of the ball hitting the bat is aluminum on the ball and I always liked the splat you can only get at a professional game these days. I like to watch golf on TV, though.

I love college basketball but only professional football. Maybe I am weird.

I became a pretty good golfer by reading Gary Player's explanations of the sport. I lost my slice by reading him and was once accused of c***ting because I hit lower and farther with my 2 wood than most people could with a driver. Player was my golf hero.

I have emphysema now and all I can do basically is watch. I always enjoyed Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and Lee Trevino and the like. These newer golfers from Tiger woods on although they are good are a little foll of themselves but I do like Rory McIlroy as well as Sergio Garcia who finally won after 73 starts without a major.

Roy, I too used a Macgregor 2 wood instead of a driver. Could hit it straighter and farther. It was also useful for 2nd shot on par 5's. Sadly I don't play anymore, shoulders are shot. Mike

Going shopping is something we do. Despite everything going on in the world. It is not a display of apathy. Picking up a mere can of spinach may be heavy laden with concerns for the world, but we pick it up and move down the aisle. Life has other things than the horrific. It is not wrong or indifference that we celebrate a child's birthday or a wedding anniversary when others are being tortured and murdered. This does not mock the dead. There is a season for everything under the sun.
