In the very first days of "Islam" it was in fact 'religious' in intent,however it very soon morphed into a very political one very much like the inquisition years of the Roman Catholic Church. which often used ungodly tactics to 'convert' non believers. It was their tactics that bought about the reformation and the rise of 'Protestant' movement.
