From Reminisce magazine...Here is a letter that my father, Charles Bendo, wrote upon returning home from the war...by Jayne Custer of Wayland, IA:

Life is really wonderful. Out of the Army in September 1945, I am finding an unlimited number of jobs on our 800-acre farm, idle for three years. Barns to be painted, fences to be built, wees eight feet tall to the plowed into the soil, livestock to be bought. Already, the combination of the goodness of bountiful nature guided by hard work is to be seen on our land. Fat Hampshire pigs farrowed since my return play in our field. Fifty-two Hereford heifers have grown sleek and fat within a month on the lush fields of grass untouched by livestock for three years. After four years in the Army, it is a real pleasure to watch the heifers lie stretched out in the pastures enjoying the warm Indian Summer sun. Fortunately, my ten horses and two tractors and all of our machinery were waiting for me. I can't express the joy I have in getting to work with them again.

So my return from the war to normal living is unfolding. I am awaiting the arrival of my wife from England, and we are looking forward to our future together on the land. The postwar era looks rosy indeed.

Brings a tear to my eye just thinking that my grand children may be able to witness that joy someday.

Thanks Slatts

Thank you Slatten. What a lovely morning picture for me to think about for the day.
