That is precisely why we upstate NYers want to secede and form a separate state. We are tired of having massive liberal masses of elites in urban environs dictate our futures and liabilities. I was born in Richmond Hill, Queens, raised in Manhattan and returned to Queens, Bayside for my high school years. I v**ed for William Buckley for mayor in 1965, the only time he ran for public office. He ran a quixotic, tongue-in-cheek campaign & we often found ourselves waiting for his next outrageous comment.

He ran for mayor on the Conservative Party, a third party, ticket. He had a snowball's chance of being elected. When someone asked him what he'd do if he were elected, he responded, "Demand a recount." With that, half the college students in the city went out to campaign for him.

I was born and raised n Irondequoit, New York. That was a long long time ago. I remember my Grandmother stating that she wished that "The City" would break off and become a State so we didn't have to support it. I remember after buying my first car, buying a "New York, Land of Taxes" license plate frame and that was probably the very first political comment I ever made. Circa 1960.

I date the start of the decline as during the late nineteenth century with Williams Jennings Bryan's Cross of Goldspeech. The gist of the speech was to disconnect gold from the dollar to help farmers. How that would really help is beyond me but that may have started fantasy politics.
