John 9

Verse 1 & 2

People want to believe the present is caused by the past, that children pay for their parents sins, and parents pay for their children‘s sins. God has already said He will not punish parents for the sins of children, or children for the sins of parents in the 18th chapter of Ezekiel. The soul that sins will die.

Verse 3 - 5

Jesus shows that a bad past can lead to a bright future. If you are accepted and popular in pubic school, real life is going to be a shock. It is hard to enjoy good times if you have never known bad. If you nod your head and can make peace with this sin sick world, it is silly to expect to be accepted by God that gave us His word. God expects fairness, justice, equity, character, honesty, and integrity. Sometimes the trials we endure prepare us for a glorious future.

Verse 6 & 7

When Jesus heals like this, there is no way he can know what Jesus looks like.

Verse 8 - 12

The people don’t even think he is the same person. He tells them he is. Sight cannot be restored without divine help. Today we should liken giving sight to the blind to teaching the unlearned. Unfortunately we are walking in darkness and following blind guides.

Verse 13 - 15

They act like Jesus did something bad. They had no compassion and sound like they are angry that the healing occurred. It sounds like they would prefer the man to be blind.

Verse 16

They condemn Jesus for healing on the Sabbath day. But they never healed or helped anybody. The more intelligent among them can see God working through Jesus.

Verse 17 - 19

The Pharisees have a problem. They don’t like Jesus, but can see God working through Jesus. They give the third degree to the man’s parents. The man’s parents were not there.

Verse 20 - 23

The blind man’s parents don’t want to be excommunicated. All they can say is that he is their son and he was born blind. They weren’t there when he was healed and don’t know Jesus. Their words are, “he is an adult, ask him”.

Verse 24 - 38

Once the church has excommunicated you, there is nothing else they can do. Ironically, the man doesn’t find the true Jesus until he is excommunicated. Those that think they are saved are actually lost. Read Matthew 16:25, Mark 8:35, and Luke 9:24. This idea that Jesus comes into your life after repentance adds to Christ’s sacrifice on the cross. Jesus did not say, “this is all I can do”, but, “it is finished”.

Verse 39 - 41

Those that think they know, don’t know. A lot of things that people think will happen, won’t. On the left, you see weeping and gnashing of teeth. As the government gets stronger this country gets weaker. Right now their tears are music to my ears. When asked by the Sanhedrin were they blind also, Christ basically said, “it would better if you were“.
