Hey, just wanted to give an update, and kind of stroke my ego a bit. About 2 weeks ago, I went to MEPS (Military Entrance Processing Station) and swore in to the US Navy! I'm super excited, absolutely expecting to get my butt kicked, and would welcome any tips.

Little more info: I'm 20 yrs old, going in to the Navy as an E-3, and my job is in the nuclear field (NF). Won't get my actual job title until I get to basic, which will be Aug 1, 2017 (20170801 for all the Navy here). The date for basic is super far away, but it might be moved up. I volunteered for subs, but it's not guaranteed. Thanks for reading and take it easy. It's all be alright in the end, and if it's not alright then it's not the end. God bless these 50 states.

They wanted me to volunteer for subs and I am glad I didn't. I have talked to a few who were in the subs and found out that you are in for a lot of studying. You have to know what every system is on the boat and be able to repair and work on everypart in the sub. You have to know what each wire is for and what it runs and controls. I commend you for going into subs. Bootcamp was the easiest thing I ever went through. Nothing like the army or marines. I was in Ground Support as an airedale.

That's what is great about being on a sub! You're correct about the studying, it takes about six months to a year to qualify and get your dolphins. But, when you do, you will know everything there is about that boat. They'll give you books called "piping tabs" that depicts all of the main and vital hydraulic lines, which you will locate and know where every valve is on those lines. You will know the electrical system, how scrubbers work, how the EBT system works and how to use it, how water is made, how oxygen is made, etc, etc.. You will describe those systems in great detail. Once you have done that satisfactorily to another qualified sub sailor, you will get his signature on your "Qual Sheet" saying you passed that test. Then, once your qual sheet is all signed off, you will take a written test, and then a thorough walk through test, from one end of the boat to the other. When you have passed that, you will receive your Dolphins. Once qualified, you will be a member of an exclusive club, and you will know where everything is on that sub and how to isolate it. Because, in the case of an emergency, everyone's life may depend on your actions, and at those depths, you have only seconds to react. I used to belong to that club, and I wouldn't trade those days for anything.

And, being a nuke type, you will be continuously studying and taking tests. Oh, and you will be standing lots of watches. Nuke types don't get much sleep...they cat nap.

Thank you and everyone else for the kind words and encouragement. I know it will be tough and our country expects nothing but the best from me, and that's exactly what I'm willing to give. Hopefully, I can make everyone proud and maybe meet a fine lady while I'm at it?

God bless you . As for advise your young but be careful who you make friends with. When I was married to the kids father who was in the marines saw a lot of young men going along with others who drank a lot gambling ect ended their chances of moving up in the ranks. How you live ,how you treat others, how well you follow orders it all counts. Good luck let us know how your doing
