we've crossed the tipping point; most Americans now receive government benefits--8gh.,b12-1
I explore public policy and politics and expose foolish ideas. Opinions expressed by Forbes Contributors are their own.
Obamacare has pushed us over the entitlements tipping point. In 2011 some 49.2 percent of U.S. households received benefits from one or more government programs—about 151 million out of an estimated 306.8 million Americans—according to U.S. Census Bureau data released last October. Currently, around 6 million to 7 million Americans who have signed up for Obamacare are receiving taxpayer-provided subsidies (though the administration’s numbers cannot be trusted, it’s all we have to work with). There are another 3 million who have signed up for Medicaid.
That means some 10 million Americans—or a total of about 161 million—are now getting government subsidies (though the final number might be somewhat lower since some may have been receiving benefits already).
Thus, perhaps 52 percent of U.S. households—more than half—now receive benefits from the government, thanks to President Obama. And Mr. Entitlement is just getting started. If Obamacare is not repealed millions more will join the swelling rolls of those dependent on government handouts.
Conservatives have long dreaded the day when the U.S. crossed the halfway mark because of all the implications for individual and fiscal responsibility. As Benjamin Franklin reportedly said, “When the people find that they can v**e themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic.” They learned that from the 2008 e******n and turned out in big numbers again in 2012.
The bigger issue is the public at large. Conservatives worked so hard to repeal Obamacare over the past few years because once the taxpayer-provided subsidies started to flow, millions would embrace the entitlement and repeal would be very tough. Especially when the media start running stories about people losing their coverage because of heartless Republicans changing the law—although forcing millions to lose their coverage because of Obamacare didn’t stop liberals.
They knew if they were able to ride out the Obamacare rollout storm, the law would likely be here to stay. Franklin D. Roosevelt captured this mentality when he observed: “We put those payroll contributions there so as to give contributors a legal, moral and political right to collect their pensions.… With those taxes in there, no damn politician can ever scrap my social security program.”

P,

I do not believe your post.

As far as I know, none of the people I am acquainted with get what I would call government benefits..

What, other the ACA is considered Gov. benefits?? What is the source of this post? Merrill Matthews, seems to be pointing to the FDR quote, which I could find no trace of being true so that is gone also..

So is this an inclusive post of all Gov. benefits or simply one more whine about the ACA????

But to add a little to my b***hing, I think the l**ting of the SS trust fund can be blamed on both parties.. Seems they both looked at it as a money pie....

OUR highways, fire protection, water, police, public schools, medical research, postal service, internet, military, libraries, sewer and professional safeguards are some of the benefits all of us receive from OUR government. We crossed the tipping point long ago of depending on OUR GOVERNMENT to make our lives better.

Gluegun, gluegun! This is the problem with you statists. These are not benefits, they are strings. They are sticks in America's collective butt. And even if you want to bend over and take it, these are things to be done by the state's or local governments not the Fed's.

We wouldn't have internet if it weren't OUR Fed's and you would have to rant alone.

These are things that we require. Some are better done by OUR Fed's and some are better done by the states. Who cares who does it as long as it gets done?

Don't fret. The money for SS isn't in a "lock box," but we will fund your SS entitlement so you can continue your retirement with that safety net intact.

Don't blame either party. We chose our representatives and continue to reelect the same people. We have to admit that if they didn't lie to us, we wouldn't v**e for them. We don't want the t***h, we want bull shte and for them to call it t***h.

We b***h when we get our charge card bill and we forget who decided to charge the stuff. We want the magic of free stuff and we want to blame someone for having to pay for it. We have become a bunch of whiners who don't want to take responsibility for our actions. I am conservative and one of the most important values of conservatism is individual responsibility.

I have important news: Every single one of us is receiving government benefits. Which ones are you willing to give up? That may be a difficult question if you are unaware of the benefits all of us receive. THINK about it AND THEN comment about it.
