In my line of work, we work with a large field of disabled, handicapped, and those with organic brain diseases. I do see some of those who are capable to work, yet, they have been on govt assistance and slide for so long, their minds are mush. For instance, one person on a very old w/c claim, had hurt their back on the job. This person sit's in their apt. smoking pot from sun up to sun down, sucking down his beer, as well as toteing large heavy boxes around that have 18 bottles of beer in it. This persons coat closet is full half way up and completely across of these boxes of beer. This person always has a full sandwich bag full of marijuana in his bathroom where he smokes. Is this disability as it's suppose to be?

No!!
We have a friend who had to be forced to go get disability by all of the people who truly cared about him.
We had a get Danny on disability intervention.
Long story...but he needs, and deserves it.

I think if you are on welfare you should be subject to drug testing.
Just like people with jobs.

Unfortunately, that person is supported by a medical marijuana card, his crispers in his refridg are full of his medicine bottles that he takes, and has all the time in the world to be an alcoholic. Physically, he gets around just fine. This person has a car, and is working with their social worker to insure it so he can drive(?). To me this is a supreme example of a leach on the government.

Is it just me, or does that make your brain boil?

I have other storys. One includes my wife.
Working at the rescue shelter gave her the "want to" to come back from a severe back injury. I'm sure you two would get along just fine with all that.

Point is: You skin your knee, you rub some dirt on it, and get back in the game.

Ahh!! Maybe I'm just narrowminded.

I have worked in the assisted housing industry for many years...and I see on a daily basis exactly what the woman is talking about..They EXPECT everthing to be GIVEN to them...they think they deserve it. Most have no ambition, no respect for themselves or anyone else and if they should go to work, when they have to pay rent they will quit their job so they don't have to pay it.

How many thousands of people interviewed said this, or just give a percentage of those who voiced this sentiment. What, 60, 70, 80% or so? A rough estimate of the children who agreed would be helpful.

I bet we would. At the young age of 13, I was hit in the side of the head with a fist so hard it fractured my skull. It had to heal on it's own causing me a lot of problems. The mind however, has a great healing power (+faith, is that is your thing) that not to many people can recognize. The government does give our population a handed out cop-out, where it should include education that will get a person out of the house to a job, as a requirement. Think so? I believe so.

Generalizing to a group the actions of a few is an enormous, nearly irreparable, injustice. This is the stuff of genocides and oppression. We have had a severe financial crisis. Millions, not a dozen or so, hardworking, honest, and decent people have lost their job, house, and nearly everything else; it is not a stretch that these people want to get back into a quality and standard of living welfare does not provide. Then we have the many disabled, elderly, and children on the entitlement rolls through no fault of their own who would surely die or terribly suffer without aid. Put the face of some miserable jerk and waste of flesh on them like this article portrays is indecent beyond comprehension. If their is a difference in sin as Catholics propose between mortal and venal sin, this squarely falls into the mortal category, which means damning.

Well Archie, lets dive under your bunker, cause I think the sky just fell on us!

I'm all for the Government aide to the needy. These needy people, young, adult, and elderly, who legitimately live on this aid, give many more people- Jobs. For those who work in this area, it is d********g to see some one with the motivation of a t***sient - yet healthy, s**m and live off this Govt aid and in effect Steal the legitimate ones money. Being in this field of employment gives me the right to b***h about it. Thank You

Never said you were not free to b***h about it. Feel free. My objection is putting this ugly and demeaning face on all people who get entitlements. It sticks for those who want to feel free to protect their own stuff and look the other way. It allows them to cut much needed programs with rigtheous fervor while extending or increasing welfare for Big Business. It lets people feel morally superior in denying programs to the needy and disadvantaged. The ire of the base is stirred by such portrayals of those on welfare being scum and they demand an end to aid. Reagan was notorious for such caricatures. And it worked.
