Before you get a "rescue dog" read this article. Remember that many "rescue dogs" are from third world countries which often make a for profit business of shipping thousands of dogs from their feral dog population to rescue organizations . Just like the Humane Society of America and Peta who move dogs around the country to areas where the "donations" charged are hundreds of dollars, there is money to be made with dogs that are really unplaceable. Keep in mind that feral dogs who have been running the streets of a third world country for years are malnurished, worm laden and may have serious diseases. they are also totally unsocialized and most people can not deal with the permanent damage to the dog that this life means. The National Animal Interest Alliance is an exceptional organization and it is worth looking at their web page.

Thank you for always sharing your knowledge, npp!!
The article didn't state which particular cities/organizations are doing this. However, without proper documentation, we may never know.
This is tragic.
It's despicable what some scum will do for a dollar.

If I were looking for a resue dog, i would start with the national club for the breeds you re looking for. For instance if you are looking for a Welsh Terrier contact the Welsh Terrier Club of America. Start with the AKC and search for the name of the national club can the rescue contact person. As far as I know none of the trade in dogs not ligitimately needing rehoming. Many breeders in a number of breeds are looking for new homes for their retired show dogs, and these dogs are well socialized, in excellent health and already spayed or neutered. You may even get the AKC registration because they are no longer breedable. Even without papers you can show them in obedience events and have fun doing so. Otherwise, ask local vets about local rescue groups or if any of their clients have a dog that needs a new home. Some humane societies are connected to HSUS and are a NONO. Go to the National Animal Interest Alliance for more information. And two rescue dogs are often better than one, particularly once the first one is healthy and used to being in your home.

Now, you know I don't go looking for one. The right ones find me!
Cats included.
BTW, Bobby McGee can climb up onto the couch with minimal help, if any!!
He seems to enjoy his half in the middle, and I just oblige.

I am glad that he is doing so well. your care for this dog is exceptional, thanks for caring about dogs which are God's gift to man. So many of the things that dogs do are limited to dogs only, such as following your point to what you are point at, and being able to read your mood by looking in your eyes.

The book you sent, Natural Dog Care has a chapter about chakras. That is so neat because it reminded me that I have lots of gemstones to use for him and also for me. We've got so many collected on our trips to the mountains.
Who knew?
