He's not the first one to jump without a 'chute, just the first to land without one. In 1965 a man named Rod Pack jumped without a 'chute but had a jump buddy hand him a reserve 'chute in free fall. He snapped it on and opened it. He was arrested for inciting a disturbance.

There were a number of air crew men,during WW2,that either jumped,or were blown out of the plane without a chute that survived.
