The parable of the sower 2
A farmer is scattering seed. Some seeds fall on the wayside and the birds come and eat them. Some fell on stony ground that wasn’t very deep. The seeds germinate quickly but because of shallow roots when the sun got hot the plants died. Some fell among thorns and the roots were deep and it produced a stalk, but the thorns choked the life out of the plant, which kept the plant from producing fruit. Some fell on good ground and bear fruit, some 100, some 60, and some 30.
This parable must be important because it is the only parable explained in three gospels. Let’s analyze what Jesus said in the parable of the sower; the seed is the word of God. Our understanding is the fruit. There are three situations that will make your understanding unfruitful. The first is being on the wayside where you have no concern for God or His word. In this case you worship at the altar of self and focus most of your attention on feeling good or fleshly pleasure. The danger of being of this mindset is that whenever the word of God is presented, something will happen to divert your attention. You will never understand God’s word because it never took root. The next ground is that of shallow soil. In shallow soil seeds germinate quickly but the roots aren’t developed. These are those who have knee jerk reactions and believe in bubble gum Christianity. They listen and react to satan’s emotional appeals and don’t wait on God’s intellectual appeals. When they first hear God’s word they accept it as such, but when God’s word disagrees with the traditions of men they are afraid to make a stand. The final unfruitful ground is seeds sown among thorns. The seeds germinate and grow but produce no fruit because the thorns come up also and choke the plant making it unfruitful. The thorns are any concern that you have in this world. The bible speaks of an earth age prior to this one and there will be at least one age when this age is over. Finally the seeds that fall on good ground have been through the stages of bad ground. The ground has been broken, it is not too shallow, and it does not have weeds which mean it doesn’t get too attached to anything in this world. Christian development and maturity should be taught.
