The parable of the sower
There are four lessons that are in three gospels. The lessons are The Sower, The Mustard Seed, The wicked vinedressers, and the greatest commandment. The sower is in Matthew 13:3 – 9, Mark 4:3 – 8, and Luke 8:5 – 8. The sower must be the most important because it is the only one explained in all three gospels. Jesus taught in parables because things are different in Heaven than on earth. In Heaven satan is recognized for who he is but on earth the lines are blurred. The story starts off with a sower scattering seeds to different types of ground. I will point out the parable of the dragnet mentioned only in Matthew and the fact that when Jesus told Peter He would make him a fisher of men that Peter was a commercial fisherman. He didn’t fish with a line, he used a net. In the story of the dragnet the fish are sorted out when the fish are pulled out of the water. The good ones are kept and the bad discarded. What this is saying is just teach the word of God as best you can. Everyone will not receive the word of God. God does the calling and choosing. Let’s go back to the sower. There are four different scenarios where the seeds fall on different ground. I will point out that the ground that produces fruit has been broken, had the stones removed, and had the weeds removed. In the first example the seeds fall on the wayside and the birds come and eat them. This represents those who been deceived by satan who think they know scripture better than someone who actually read it. You’ll be discussing the bible and something will happen to divert attention. It may be a phone call or a pretty girl or a song on the radio. You have to be paying attention to catch this. The next type of ground is ground that is not that deep before you hit bedrock. In this ground the seeds spring up quickly but don’t have a deep enough root system to draw water. When the sun gets hot it kills the plants. This symbolizes those who listen to sermons but don’t study for themselves. Persecutions are coming and come to everyone. Christ said “in this world we shall have tribulation”. He also says in John 16:2 that whoever kills His disciples will think he’s doing a service to God. When they come and catch you unawares it is natural to want people to like you. You go back to the way you were doing things if you have this mindset. In the third type of ground it has not been weeded. When the plants mature the weeds keep the good plants from bearing fruit. This symbolizes those who try to put new wine into old bottles. That doesn’t work. If you want to prosper in this world go ahead but you will not get the best of both worlds. You can’t straddle the fence. Friendship with the world makes you God’s enemy. Finally we get to good ground. I will point out that the ground has been broken, had the stones removed, been weeded and each plant has a different yield.
