The mustard seed
It is one of the smallest seeds but grows into a plant large enough that birds can lodge in its branches. We should note that there are many kinds of plants. The list would include vegetables, flowers, weeds, grasses, thorns, trees, and bushes. Why would Jesus pick a spice? What is the purpose of a spice? Spices add little nutrition but lots of flavor. So what are we saying? The results of Godly living come more from making good choices that will encourage good things to happen and avoiding calamity than divine or supernatural intervention. God’s blessings come as the choice to make good decisions. If you make decisions to please God it will make your life easier. This bubble-gum Christianity where instead of putting in a quarter and getting a gumdrop, praises go up and blessings come down does not produce the outcome it promises. God does not receive praise from men according to John 5:41. This is just wasted emotion and the only people who profit from listening to bubble-gum Christianity are the teachers of it. The reality is that we reap what we sow. If you go to class and complete all of your assignments you will graduate. If you start drinking in your teenage years there is a good chance that the main goal in your life will be feeling good. The primary goal in your life should not be pleasing yourself and concerning yourself with your feelings. Providing for your needs like food and shelter are worthy accomplishments. You can get a better job with more education. Success consists not only of avoiding negatives but actively pursuing positives like hard work and education. It is a proven fact that the more education you have the better job you can get. Let’s go back to the mustard seed. The story symbolizes that God’s kingdom starts small and increases, when it increases the birds of the air lodge in its branches. Looking at birds we should know that birds do nothing for trees. They look pretty and sound lovely but there is not much meat on them. In like fashion these religious birds of the air sound and look good but if you need meat from God’s word they can’t provide much.
