The three rich men
At least three different men who had a lot of stuff and were considered wealthy by their peers questioned Jesus on how to get eternal life. In Matthew and Mark Jesus gives six laws of God of which five are in the Ten Commandments, in Luke Jesus just gives five of the last six. In all cases the last commandment is omitted. This idea must be important because similar but not the same circumstances are found. The encounter between Jesus and the rich men are found in Matthew 19:10 – 22, Mark 10:17 – 22, ad Luke 18:18 – 23. In Matthew the last commandment is replaced with “love your neighbor as yourself”. In Mark the last commandment is replaced with “do not defraud”. What the bible is saying is we should study the whole bible. Looking at the Ten Commandments we see that the first four cover the relationship between us and God. The last six are between us and everybody else. I know the fifth commandment says honor your parents but you can look at the relationship between your spouse and their parents and see how your relationship will go. If a woman doesn’t respect her own father, it is foolish to think you will get better treatment. The same I guess goes with men. If a man doesn’t respect his own mother he will not treat his wife better than his mother. The commandments between us and everybody else should be obeyed. Breaking them will hurt you worse the anyone else.
