One rare Silver back Gorilla, and the economics of supply and demand.
Anyone ask themselves, why the laws of supply and demand didn't play a larger role when the decision was made to k**l the Silverbacked Gorilla at the Cincinnati Zoo? Here is a rare Silverbacked Gorilla, whose numbers, still existing in the world, can probably be counted in the hundreds, or fewer k**led to save some kid when the category (humans) the kid belongs to numbers in the billions. I wonder what contributions this kid will eventually render to society; the probability of his continued existence having come at a high cost.
The zoo officials should have made the decision to tranquilize, rather than k**l, and let fate decide the outcome. Yeah, yeah! Don't bother me with, "What if it were my child," it wouldn't have been my child. I would have been paying attention to where he or she were at all times. Some parents, don't have the sense God gave a goose.
To suggest that one of your children never made a mistake, while you or your wife looked away for second is ludicrous!

If you think you will look away or not hold their hand, you should use a harness. Especially at a zoo. It saves lives.
No some parents don't. As a former Paramedic who has attended the death of children I can say that there is a random aspect to life that no attentiveness on the part of parents can allow for and there but for the grace of God go any one of us. It would be impossible to monitor and protect our children 24/7 and we have to allow a certain amount of independence for the emotional health of the child. Nonetheless who among us parents has not felt that fleeting millisecond of fear and panic when we temporarily lose sight of a child in a crowded shopping mall or some other similar situation. The Zoo must have some responsibilty here too for not providing proper small child proof fencing.
Like many here you have indulged in the cheap luxury of smug sanctimony marinated in the ignorance of the actual full circumstances of this event. I pray you do not ever have to answer your door to a Police Chaplain...

So in your opinion, it was all just a simple mistake? I would never say my children never made a mistake. However, a parent's degree of attention should meet the dangers of the surrounding environment. The zoo, for all the precautions taken , I would consider a hostile environment for a child, and not the least being human predators( pardon the pun) on the prowl.
It is strange to me that we have to monitor every move of the children these days. Parents get in trouble for letting kids play alone at the play ground. This child was too young to be out of sight at the zoo, but the parents were also young and dumb. The zoo justified its reaction by saying that they could not know how the gorilla would react before the tranquilizer took effect.
