Do's & Don't's!!!
To assume what other people are thinking or feeling without asking them is to invite disaster at the worst, & misunderstanding at the best. And it is just as disastrous is to assume other people know what we think, feel, want or need without our telling them. Many potentially good friendships and even marriages perish due to our false assumptions and our lack of honest, up-front communication.
Do we assume others can't live without us ?? Or maybe wouldn't know what to think or feel unless we told them what to think or feel ?? Do we take for granted that "silence means assent" ?? Do we assume others don't have time for us, or don't like us or care about us, if they don't call or go out of their way to talk to us ?? Do we think others should know our minds without our ever speaking our thoughts & feeling aloud ??
It will not hurt to assume the same distorted, limited, or even broken thought pattern of others that we may have ourselves. We each need to take the initiative to ask probing questions and give honest, up-front & direct responses in all of our relationships.
TODAY I will not make the mistake of projecting my thoughts & feelings onto others. I will make it a priority to initiate honest and open communication about what I am thinking & feeling.
