Report: Kristol eyes conservative writer, lawyer for third party bid

By Al Weaver (@alweaver22) • 5/31/16 5:28 PM

Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol is recruiting conservative author and lawyer David French to mount an independent p**********l campaign against Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, according to a report.

Reported first by Bloomberg, French, a veteran of the Iraq war and a staff writer at National Review is being courted by Kristol to mount a third party bid.

In his latest column for the Weekly Standard, Kristol floated the conservative writer as someone that would stack up well against either of the two likely party nominees. He also mentioned French's latest column, which calls on 2012 GOP nominee Mitt Romney to launch a third White House bid in an effort to deny both candidates from winning.

"I happen to know David French," Kristol wrote. "To say that he would be a better and a more responsible president than Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump is to state a t***h that would become self-evident as more Americans got to know him."

"There are others like him," Kristol continued. "There are thousands of Americans who — despite a relative lack of fame or fortune — would be manifestly superior to our current choices. And there are many, many others who stand ready to help whoever emerges to have the basic resources, assistance, and infrastructure to mount a credible effort."

He also mentioned Romney, Judd Gregg and Mel Martinez before discussing French.

The Washington Examiner and Weekly Standard share common ownership. Kristol has been a leader in the #NeverTrump movement.

Kristol teased a possible third party challenger to Trump and Clinton over the Memorial Day weekend, with Trump himself lampooning any bid from a third party on Twitter and during Tuesday morning press conference. Kristol fired back soon after, calling the real estate mogul a "roaring jackass" in a tweet.
