Cruz Ends P**********l Campaign
By Jonathan Swan - May 3, 2016 - The Hill
Ted Cruz on Tuesday night suspended his p**********l campaign after losing to Donald Trump in Indiana's primary.
"From the beginning, I said I would continue on as long as there was a viable path to victory," Cruz said in his speech before supporters in Indianapolis. "Tonight, I'm sorry to say, it appears that path has been foreclosed. Together we left it all on the field in Indiana. We gave it everything we got. But the v**ers chose another path. And so, with a heavy heart, but with boundless optimism for the long-term future of our nation, we are suspending our campaign."
Stunned supporters shouted "no!" as Cruz informed the crowd of his decision.
Until that point, Cruz had insisted he would stay in the race until the Republican convention in Cleveland this summer, and predicted he would beat Trump in a floor fight for delegates.
But there were signs this week that Cruz was losing grip of his plans, which relied heavily on Indiana.
As polls showed Trump's growing dominance over the Texas senator, a desperation began to seep into Cruz's tactics.
On Monday, he dramatically clashed with Trump supporter, who repeatedly called him "Lyin' Ted" and told Cruz that Indiana would reject him for Trump. It all played out in front of TV cameras and quickly went v***l.
And just hours before the Indiana polls closed Tuesday, Cruz threw every insult he could muster at Trump, ditching his longstanding promise to refrain from making personal attacks against his rivals.
Cruz labeled Trump a "pathological liar," a "serial philanderer,' a bully, "utterly amoral," and a narcissist to a degree America has never seen before.
While Cruz had always hedged when asked whether he would quit if he lost Indiana; his campaign had laid a huge bet on the state.
His campaign and John Kasich’s made a deal in which Kasich would stay out of Indiana, while Cruz would steer clear of campaigning in Oregon and New Mexico. The agreement, which began to fray almost immediately, was widely viewed as a failure.
Now Cruz is gone, a Trump nomination is all but inevitable.
