Jack,
The seperation of church and state was not, never has been, in the Constitution. It was a concept that was dreamed up by some law clerk after WWII. It was never really established until Madelin O'Hare brought her case before the Supreme Court in 1963. The intent of the Founding Fathers was that the government would not support one particular denomination, The Anglican Church, with its money. If you look at the early cases that were brought before the Supreme Court at the founding of our nation, they, the S. C., always ruled in favor of the Church. The First Amendment was designed to protect the government from the church and not the church from the government. If you read the writings of Washington, Jefferson, Adams, B. Rush, Franklin, they believed that for America to remain free, strong and prosperous, it would have to have a foundation well rooted in the Christian Philosophy of life. If I may add something else, fifty-three of the fifty-five founding fathers were Orthodox, Evangelical Christians. The were well educated in Greek, Latin, Law, Philosophy, Theology and history. They knew their stuff. According to a lot of historians, the men that were gathered in Philadelphia from 1787 to 1791 were the greatest wealth of human talent ever assembled in human history. The talent alone that came from Virginia was greater then the Golden Age of Greece. The seperation of church and state has been the greatest lie perpetrated upon the American People, our culture and our history. In our current educational system, they never teach our young people these important and relevant facts. How Sad!
