The error of Balaam
The story of Balaam is in Numbers 22nd through 24th chapters. What happened was the children of Jacob were putting fear in the kings of the Middle-East because they defeat every nation they fight and take their land. God had promised them this land over 400 years before. The king of Moab (Balac) wants a prophet (Balaam) to curse God’s children so that they lose the battle. We should note that God doesn’t go against His children for long and then it is to teach a lesson. Balac offers Balaam a lot of stuff to curse God’s children. Balaam wants the stuff but God won’t let Balaam curse His children. Balaam knows that if Israel starts worshiping idols God may curse the children Himself. His plot was very effective as Israel started by sleeping with Midianite women and end up in idolatry. In the 25th chapter of Numbers Israelite men and Midianite women commit fornication. In Numbers 31:8 Balaam dies fighting Israel on the side of the Midianites. In Revelation 2:14 what Balaam did is mentioned. Why are the actions of Balaam not mentioned in Numbers? The bible is about God and His children. It does not concern itself with the actions of the enemies of God’s children. What Balaam did was let his desire for wealth cloud his judgment. Man makes money, but money doesn’t make man.
