90,609,000: Americans Not in Labor Force Climbs to Another Record - It increase by 516,000 people that fall off unemployment benefits. This is the Real Unemployment numbers that Obama or the News Media won't talk about. This number is 43.6% unemployment in America. So who is going to talk about it???? From July to August, according to BLS, Americans not participating in the labor force climbed from 89,957,000 to 90,473,000, pushing past 90,000,000 for the first time, with a one month increase of 516,000. In September, it climbed again to 90,609,000, an increase of 136,000 during the month. Is this the hope and change Obama promise?????

Why should they go get a job when you can make more on the dole.

http://www.forbes.com/sites/theapothecary/2013/09/02/on-labor-day-2013-welfare-pays-more-than-minimum-wage-work-in-35-states/

In 22 of these states it pays more than $10 hr.

It is an interesting chart. And somewhat depressing.

Here's what I'm wondering about the factors going into the labor market participation rates:

Is there age discrimination at work? With a 10% unemployment rate, are employers picking younger and cheaper workers, discouraging older workers from looking?

Are middle aged jobless folks going into retirement because they are not offered jobs with salaries commensurate with their experience?

I agree with you: this is not a pretty picture. The great recession was devastating to many folks.

I suspect yes to both questions of yours. Another factor to consider is the boarder runners (undocumented workers) who are more than willing to work min. wage jobs drive wages down.
I can't blame them, they just want a better life for themselves and families, after all US min wage is far more than they could earn at home.

I'm 50 and a two time loser if you follow me. Spent a good deal of time locked up and my record isn't very good. I took a very tough job in the fishing industry, and because I worked hard I now work here full time at a decent job behind a desk.

There's LOTS of work up here for those who have the desire to go for it. Most of it is taken now by people from foreign countries -the Filipines, North Africans, South Pacific Islanders etc. These companies can and will hire Americans. They even send recruitment teams to the Lower 48, but the way they go about it is not a well known fact. I'd encourage anyone who needs work to go online and do some investigation. That's how I got my job. The larger fishing companies need drivers, mechanics, maintenance personnel and office personnel, and they prefer to hire for these full-time positions, from the folks the initially bring up as seasonal processors. If I can do it anyone can do it.

The official unemployment rate is wh**ever the Obama administration wants it to be.

It is a f**e, meaningless number. The only oficially unemployed are those collecting unemployment. It is supposed to be a percentage of the "work force". But who knows how many are in the "work Force. Those who have collected the max unemployment are no longer called unemployed for unemployment rate purposes.

Recently a very large number of applicants for unemployment were told to drop their unemployment applications and instead apply for SS disability. That accomplished two things. It helped to reduce the official unemployment rate and put a new burden on the SS system. Not to mention that those phoney disability claiments were not bound by the time limits of unemployment pay.

All administrations lie about everything unfavorable to them. Its very annoying. How can a v**er make a proper decision on e******ns and issues?

Here's a little more food for thought: The US has the largest prison population in the world except, maybe, China which locks up political prisoners. Most of the people in prison here are doing relatively short sentences...a year, two, three...what would happen to the unemployment numbers if THEY were counted? Thousands of them are released every day and I'll bet most are ineligible for unemployment. They probably never get counted.
